Six Greyhounds Named to Landmark Conference Spring All-Sportsmanship Team

TOWSON, Md. --- The Landmark Conference has announced its 2016 Spring All-Sportsmanship Team, which includes one student-athlete from each institution for each sport selected by the players and coaches from their respective team.

The All-Sportsmanship Team recognizes student-athletes who epitomize the ideals of sportsmanship. The student-athletes selected demonstrate fair play, graciousness in victory and respectfulness in defeat. They are ambassadors for the team, both on and off the field, and galvanize their teammates toward their goals. These student-athletes exhibit respect for themselves, teammates, coaches, opponents, officials, spectators and the greater campus community.

The All-Sportsmanship Team was created by the Landmark Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in 2013 as a way to highlight student-athletes who are making an impact. The Landmark Conference previously awarded a Sportsmanship Cup before the All-Sportsmanship Team replaced the Cup at the beginning of the 2013-14 academic year. 

Baseball

Senior first baseman Charles Savite is the baseball squad's selection to the All-Sportsmanship Team. Savite, who was named to the Landmark All-Conference First Team in both 2016 and 2014 as well as the Second Team last season, hit .342 this spring with 51 hits, 31 runs, 13 doubles, a triple, five home runs, a team high 37 RBIs, 14 walks and six stolen bases. Savite also had a team leading 323 putouts to finish his career with a school record 1,354 putouts, and he also holds school records for games played at 165 and at-bats with 626. Savite, who was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team in 2014, completed his career second in RBIs with 157, second in total bases with 284, third in hits with 206, third in doubles with 43 and tied for sixth in runs with 118.  

"Charles has been a positive leader in our program for the last four seasons," stated Head Coach Paul Engelhardt. "Charles was a competitor during a game, and did everything he could to help his team compete. His baseball ability is very high, and had a great career with us. He also showed leadership off the field by being part of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in his time at Moravian."

Softball

Senior right fielder Mary Schlosbon been named to the Landmark All-Sportsmanship Team as the representative for the Moravian softball team for the second straight year. Schlosbon played and started in 41 games for the Hounds, who finished the season at 37-6 while capturing another Landmark Conference Championship and earning a pair of wins in the NCAA Division III Tournament before falling in the Ithaca, New York Regional final. Schlosbon was name to the 2016 Landmark All-Conference First Team for a second straight year and Landmark Spring Academic Honor Roll. This spring. Schlosbon hit .333 with 46 hits, 27 runs, three doubles, three triples and seven RBIs, and she completed her career with 153 hits, tied for 13th in school history.

"Mary led for four years by a positive example and that is one of the reasons she was a team captain this season," commented Head Coach John Byrne. "She played the game the right way and has been a selfless player that always looks to do what she can to put the team in a better situation. We wish her the best in her future career and know that she help set an example for the younger players in our program."

Men's Track and Field 

Senior sprinter/hurdler Woodrow Battle is the men's track and field team's 2016 recipient of the All-Sportsmanship honor. Battle finished seventh in the 110-meter high hurdles at the 2016 Landmark Conference Outdoor Championships with a time of 17.18 seconds, and he also placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.73 seconds. Battle was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles at the Landmark Indoor meet in 9.79 seconds.

"He is one of the most uplifting people we have on our team," noted Head Coach Jesse Baumann. "He is supportive of everybody, teammate or foe, and seems to have a knack for getting everybody into a positive mind frame whenever he's in the room. He brings an infectious energy wherever he goes and we're extremely fortunate to have his athletic talents and personality with us for the next three years." 

Women's Track and Field

Senior distance runner Jessie Goldberg was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team from Moravian women's track and field squad. Goldberg missed the season this year with an injury but has been an integral part of both the track & field and women's cross country program's during her time at Moravian.

"Our track/cross country teams volunteer for a number of road races in the area," commented Baumann. "In virtually every one, Jessie would wait for the last finisher and walk/jog back to the end line with them. This is a great example of the personality and sportsmanship that Jessie displays on a regular basis. She cares for others, cheers on everyone, and is an incredibly upbeat and supportive teammate."

Men's Tennis

Senior C.J. Widdifield is the 2016 men's tennis selection to the Landmark All-Sportsmanship Team. Widdifield played at fourth singles and second doubles for the Greyhounds this year, helping the team to a 13-7 record and a second straight berth in the ECAC Division III Outdoor Championships where Moravian finished as the runner-up after winning the title in 2015. Widdifield finished his career with 28 singles and 26 doubles victories with the Greyhounds.

"To C. J., sportsmanship is required in order to participate," stated first year Head Coach Alan Heverly. "He holds himself to rigorous standards and he lives up to them. He is a fine example of old school standards and the world of sports needs more people like him to exemplify the best possible definition of the word 'Sportsman'."

Women's Tennis

Senior Courtnie Lambert has been named to the All-Sportsmanship Team from the women's tennis program for a second consecutive spring. Lambert was named to the Landmark All-Conference Second Team in both singles and doubles this year while making the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll for the third straight spring. Lambert finished her career with a 42-27 mark in singles play and was a two-year captain for Moravian, and she helped the squad to a 7-8 mark this season.

"Courtnie treats her opponents with respect: not only with her high standards of honesty, but also in her demeanor," noted Heverly. "Win or lose, she has always demonstrated courtesy and politeness and has never raised her voice. She can certainly be proud of her win and loss record, but she should be more proud of how she conducts herself on and off the court."
