Goodwin, Spirk, Brockett & Finnegan Earn USTFCCCA All-Mideast Region Honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. --- The Moravian College men's and women's track & field teams had 10 student-athletes named as United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Region honorees this week.

The USTFCCCA is in its second year named All-Region selections for indoor and outdoor track & field at the NCAA Division III level after having All-Region honors in cross country for a number of years. For a student-athlete to earn All-Region honors, an athlete must be ranked in the top-5 of an individual event in the region according to the final Track & Field Results Reporting System data or be part of a top-3 relay team. Moravian is part of the Mideast Region.

The Greyhound men had two honorees with sophomore Scott Goodwin in the pole vault and sophomore John Spirk in 60-meter hurdles. Goodwin had a career-best height of 4.67 meters (15-3.75) in the pole vault while Spirk's fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles was 8.42 seconds this winter.

"Both John and Scott started to ascend as freshmen last year and showed they could be some of the future stars of our program, and they've continued that trajectory into their sophomore years," commented Head Coach Jesse Baumann. "As long as they continue to work as hard as they have to this point, the coaching staff feels making the NCAAs is a realistic goal for both of them before they graduate here. They're both very driven and focused throughout the year, and it's why they keep improving so much and are such big parts of our program's success."

The Moravian women's team two student-athletes named to All-Region with senior Meg Brockett the 5,000-meter run and senior Jackie Finnegan in the weight throw. Both Brockett and Finnegan earned All-Region honors for the second straight winter. Brockett has a season-best time of 17:20.20 in the 5K while Finnegan set the school record in the weight throw with a toss of 15.39 meters (50-6).

"Both Meg and Jackie have been anchors for our programs for all four years they've been here, and have played integral roles in our team's success and winning some of the conference titles that we have," Baumann said. "Just like John and Scott, they work extremely hard throughout the year and set good examples as senior leaders of the daily commitment you need to make to the sport in order to be successful."

Brockett is scheduled to run in the 5,000-meter run at the 2017 NCAA Indoor National Championship being hosted by North Central College on Friday, March 10 at 5:00 p.m. EST to finish off the indoor season.
