BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- More than 40 Landmark Conference female student-athletes and administrators gathered on the campus of Moravian College over the weekend of September 30 and October 1 to participate in the Landmark Conference Women's Coaching Symposium.
The Landmark Conference Women's Coaching Symposium, organized by the senior woman administrators at the member intuitions, was designed to provide participants with an opportunity to learn more about the coaching profession. In addition, aspiring coaches had a chance to network with other student-athletes and coaches. Beyond education and networking, the symposium aimed to help in the recruitment and retention of women in coaching.
The event kicked off Saturday with a keynote address from Karen Weaver, who is currently a professor of sport management at Drexel University and has a rich background of collegiate athletics both coaching and administration. Weaver touched on the history and impact of Title IX and facilitated a panel of current coaches and administrators on how they got where they are today.
Pam Herath, Director of Curriculum and Programming at Strive Leadership, facilitated the remainder of the two-day workshop. Herath led the participants in identifying their core values, aligning what matters to them with those values, identifying strengths and weaknesses and goal setting.
"It was amazing to see the level of engagement from the student-athlete," stated Moravian Associate Athletic Director Renee Hellert. "Both Karen and Pam did a wonderful job facilitating conversations and introducing topics that will empower future female leaders. We are thankful to the Landmark Conference for supporting this event and creating the opportunity."
The symposium also served as an opportunity for student-athletes to network.
"This weekend was a great experience," commented Moravian graduate student and women's basketball player Camille McPherson. "We had the opportunity to meet and learn from female leaders from around the conference, and the chance to discuss inspiring topics on coaching and leadership. It is important that female leaders and coaches continue to be developed, so I am grateful that I had the chance to attend and for the conference for sponsoring the weekend as well as the SWA's from around the conference who helped organize it."
