Six Greyhounds Selected to 2017 Landmark Conference Fall All-Sportsmanship Team

TOWSON, Md. --- The Landmark Conference has named 47 student-athletes to the All-Sportsmanship Team. The All-Sportsmanship Team includes one student-athlete from each institution for each sport and is selected by the players and coaches from their respective team.

Of the 47 student-athletes, 10 were repeat honorees, and 11 were named to the Landmark All-Conference teams in their respective sports.

The All-Sportsmanship Team recognizes student-athletes who epitomize the ideals of sportsmanship. The student-athletes selected demonstrate fair play, graciousness in victory and respectfulness in defeat. They are ambassadors for the team, both on and off the field, and galvanize their teammates toward their goals. These student-athletes exhibit respect for themselves, teammates, coaches, opponents, officials, spectators, and the greater campus community.

The All-Sportsmanship Team was created by the Landmark Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in 2013 as a way to highlight student-athletes who are making an impact. The Landmark previously awarded a Sportsmanship Cup before the All-Sportsmanship Team replaced the Cup for the 2013-14 academic year.

Women's Soccer

Senior defender Maria Manz has been named to the Landmark All-Sportsmanship Team as the representative for the Moravian women's soccer squad. Manz helped Moravian to a 9-6-1 this fall as she was part of a defense that allowed just six goals all season as the Hounds dropped six 1-0 matches including two in overtime. Manz had a pair of assists this fall while taking 14 corner kicks, and she finished her career with three assists.

"Many teams hope to have a player like Maria on their roster," commented Head Coach Jeff Ykoruk. "Maria consistently was a team-first leader who worked hard at developing as a player, but cared more about the end result for our team. She always demonstrated what is right about being a student-athlete and a player that all of our younger players can learn from."

Cross Country

Sophomore Carly Danoski is the women's cross country honoree on the All-Sportsmanship Team. Danoski ran a time of 25:46.05 to place 17th and help the Greyhounds finish third at the 2017 Landmark Conference Championships.

"Carly is a student of our sport," Director of Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track & Field Jesse Baumann said. "If she's not studying, you can safely assume she's on milesplit or TFRRS looking up results from recent meets. It gives her a strong appreciation of the sport and her competitors. In addition to that, she's extremely humble, respectful, and mature. She's complimentary of others, even her top rivals after the race. She's a great representative for Moravian College and our cross country program."

Sophomore Justin Beasley-Turner was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team for the men's cross country program. Beasley-Turner was 12th in the 2017 Landmark Conference Championships with a time of 28:40.74 as he earned Landmark All-Conference Second Team honors for the first time in his career.

"Justin is a very energetic, supportive, and respectful," noted Baumann. "He was the one that lead the final cheer before our team at the starting line of Landmarks thanks to his inherent enthusiasm. However, he's also one of the first to congratulate fellow competitors as soon as the race ends. He's extremely personable, friendly, and just in general a nice, respectful person who represents our cross country team and the college well."

Volleyball

Senior defensive specialist Ashton Galasso was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team from Moravian's volleyball squad. Galasso finished the season with 24 digs and four service aces as the Greyhounds finished 18-15 while reaching the semifinals of the Landmark Conference Tournament. Galasso had 154 digs, 27 service aces, three assists and one kill during her career.

"Ashton has been the epitome of a team player these last four years and this season especially, commented Head Coach Shelley Bauder. "She was instrumental in promoting and maintaining a good team culture this year as a captain, and is respected by her teammates and coaches alike. Ashton's positive attitude toward her opponents and officials and all those around her made her the perfect choice for this sportsmanship award."

Field Hockey

Junior defender Emily Duddy is the field hockey team's 2017 recipient of the All-Sportsmanship honor. Duddy played in 14 matches this season with ten starts, and she made a pair of defensive saves. Duddy has seen action in 42 career contests for the Greyhounds with three defensive saves.

"Emily is the true definition of sportsmanship on and off the field," stated Head Coach Kristen Gillis. "She holds herself and her teammates to a high standard and is that positive voice throughout the team. She leads through example and is a player that her teammates respect and look up to. The players and coaching staff are lucky to have her as a part of this team."

Men's Soccer

Senior defender Brandon Percey is the men's soccer team's selection to the All-Sportsmanship Team. Percey was a key on the Greyhounds defense that helped the squad to an 8-5-4 mark this season and just 17 goals allowed. Percy, who was limited to five matches due to an injury this fall, saw action in 34 career contests including starting the final 21 matches he played in the for the Hounds.
