NEW ORLEANS, La. --- Moravian College has had three student-athletes named United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic individuals and its women's track & field squad honored as an All-Academic Team by the USTFCCCA for the 2018 season.
Moravian's honorees were senior Mary Kate Duncan and sophomore Carly Danoski from the women's team and junior John Spirk from the men's squad. Duncan finished her degree in public health this past May while Danoski is majoring in environmental studies. Spirk is a computer science major.
To earn All-Academic individual honors, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 and either competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship or finished the regular season ranked in the national top-50 in an individual event or ranked in the national top-35 in a relay event on the official NCAA Descending Order List. That group totaled 627 women and 408 men including the three Greyhounds and a total of eight student-athletes from the Landmark Conference.
Duncan finished third in the nation in the javelin at the 2018 NCAA Division III National Championships with a throw of 43.69 meters (143-4) to earn All-American honors for the third consecutive spring after winning the national title in the event in 2017. She was also named 2018 USTFCCCA All-Region in the event and won the Landmark Conference title in the javelin back in May.
Danoski was a USTFCCCA All-Region selection in the 800-meter run, which she won at the Landmark Conference Championships, and she also competed in the event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, finishing 19th in a time of 2:13.53. She set the school record in the event with a time of 2:10.72 at the Swarthmore College Final Qualifier on May 14. Danoski also earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors indoors in the 800-meter run with the second fastest time in school history at 2:16.18, and she was the Landmark Conference Champion in the event too.
Spirk earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors outdoors in both the 110-meter high hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles with top five times in each event in the Mideast Region. Spirk had season-best times of 14.76 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles and 54.61 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles. He captured the Landmark Conference titles in both events for the third straight spring. Spirk was also a USTFCCCA All-Region honoree indoors in the 60-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 8.26 seconds as he won the Landmark Conference title for a third consecutive winter and garnered Landmark Conference Male Indoor Track Athlete of the Year honors.
The women's team also maintained a 3.33 cumulative GPA after the spring semester and was one of 185 women's teams to earn All-Academic honors and 291 total NCAA Division III teams. To be considered an All-Academic Team, programs must have a cumulative GPA of 3.10 or greater.
