Top 10 Games of 2022-23 - #6 Baseball Walks Off with Extra-Inning Win over Scranton

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing to look back at its 2022-23 athletic campaign. The next event in the Top 10 Exciting Games from the past year is our No. 6 highlight – the baseball team earning an 11-8, 12-inning walk off victory over The University of Scranton in a game that took two days to complete.

The contest began on Saturday, April 22 but would not be finished until Sunday, April 23. The Royals opened up 7-1 lead before the Hounds started to rally. The Blue & Grey scored twice in the fifth inning, and Moravian added five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-7 lead with senior second baseman Chris Pow scoring the go-ahead run on an error.

Scranton tied the game 8-8 with a run in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the eighth, Moravian had a pair of runners on with one out when the second lightning delay of the game began. The length of the storm forced the remainder of the contest to be finished the next day.

When play resumed Sunday, neither squad was able to push the winning run across the plate in the regulation nine innings. The Greyhounds did load the bases in the tenth frame but were unable to score as the game pressed on.

The Hounds eventually won the contest in the bottom of the 12th inning. Senior designated hitter Derek Holmes hit an infield single with two outs, and freshman first baseman Sean Superka reached on a fielder's choice with Holmes beating the play to second base. Sophomore right fielder Nick Henry followed with a three-run homer to left center that hit the top of the fence and bounced over. The round tripper was Henry's first collegiate home run.
