Top 10 Stories of 2014-15 - #7 Moravian Receives NADIIIAA/Jostens Community Service Award

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College continues its look back at the 2014-15 athletic campaign with Top 10 Stories from the past year including the No. 7 story – Moravian receives the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA)/Jostens Community Service Award for On-Going Project for Moravian's work with Play 4Kay and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

In February 2015, Moravian raised over $17,000 in its 2015 Play 4Kay efforts to lead NCAA Division III for a seventh straight year, and the total of $17,038 from this year pushed Moravian's overall effort to $74,971 over the last seven years.

Below is the original story when Moravian received the NADIIIAA/Jostens Community Service Award in January.

The National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) recognized Moravian College as one of the winners of this year's community service awards at the annual NCAA Convention at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center just outside Washington, D.C., on January 17. Director of Athletics Scot Dapp accepted the trophy as well as a $1,000 check for the general scholarship fund at Moravian College.

The awards program, established in 2001, is co-sponsored by the NADIIIAA and Jostens and is intended to recognize the many contributions Division III student-athletes regularly make to their campuses and local communities. Recognition is given for projects in three categories: One-Time Projects, An Array of Projects, and Ongoing Projects. The winners this year in each of the three award categories are, respectively: Keuka College, Moravian College, and SUNY College at Oswego.  Moravian's recognition in the On-Going Project category was earned through the women's basketball team's commitment to Play 4Kay and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

In addition to presenting commemorative trophies to the three winning institutions, the NADIIIAA and Jostens will make a $1,000 contribution to the general scholarship fund at each of these institutions. The awards were presented during the NADIIIAA Reception at the NCAA Convention held in National Harbor, Maryland on January 17. 

"I am quite proud of the community service work that is done throughout the year by so many of our teams and individual athletes," commented Dapp. "This award from Jostens and NADIIIAA specifically recognizes the yearly work done by our women's basketball team with their Pink Zone / Play 4Kay activities which raise money for cancer research. Coach Mary Beth Spirk, her staff, and her team do stellar work which is evident by the fact that for six straight years they have led Division III in the amount of money raised for this very worthy cause."

Over the past six years, the women's basketball team has raised a total of $57,933 for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Their 2015 Play 4Kay day is set for Saturday, February 14 when the squad hosts Elizabethtown College at 2:00 p.m. following the annual Alumni game at noon.

The NADIIIAA is an association comprised of athletics administrators from the nearly 450 institutions and 40 conferences competing at the NCAA Division III level. Objectives of the NADIIIAA include providing a unifying channel that can serve as a resource and focus attention on issues specific to the membership of D-III and encouraging the continued development of athletics programs focused on the student-athlete and based on sound educational philosophy.
