Baseball Falls Twice at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Moravian College baseball team dropped a pair of games versus The Catholic University of America Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 and 6-3, in Landmark Conference action at the Nationals Youth Sports Complex in Washington, D.C. with Catholic's field unplayable after the winter weather earlier this month.

In the opener, the Greyhounds had a 6-3 edge in hits with sophomore center fielder Anthony Gaetaniello going 2-for-3 but it was the Cardinals that took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning.

Moravian, which left nine runners on base including five in scoring position, attempted to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Gaetaniello singled with one out and stole second base. Senior right fielder Matt Hanson ripped a single into left field but Gaetaniello was thrown out at the plate to end the game after coming around third on the hit.

Freshman Dan Morrin was the hard-luck pitcher for the Blue & Grey, falling to 1-1 on the season after allowing just a run on three hits and two walks to go with four strikeouts.

In the final contest of the three-game Landmark series, the Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Junior left fielder Cameron Leon doubled with one out and moved to third on a single by sophomore designated hitter Nicolas Ampietro. Freshman first baseman Logan Welles walked to load the bases. After the second out of the inning, Gaetaniello connected on a two-RBI single to score Leon and Ampietro while Welles scored on an error.

Catholic scored all six of its runs in the bottom of the third inning on just two hits but the Cardinals drew four walks in the frame and had one batter hit by a pitch.

Freshman John Wiedmayer took the loss on the mound for the Hounds while juniors Hunter Guard and Brett Wagner also saw action on the hill for Moravian.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, March 19 when the squad hosts New Jersey City University at 3:30 p.m. in Moravian's 2015 home season at Gillespie Field.
