Baseball Earns Sweep at Susquehanna in Conference Action

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team swept a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Susquehanna University, winning the first game, 3-0, and taking the nightcap, 5-3 in 11 innings.

Freshman Dan Morrin earned his second win of the season in the opener as he combined with juniors Ian Carbone and Hunter Guard to limit Susquehanna to three hits and four walks in the game. Morrin also recorded two strikeouts while Guard picked up his first career save on the mound.

The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when senior second baseman Alex Longernecker drew a leadoff walk an scored on an Ball hit by senior left fielder Justin Pilchman that was misplayed by Susquehanna.

The Blue & Grey added a run in the top of the sixth inning when Pilchman singled to begin the inning. He scored from third on a suicide squeeze bunt by senior third baseman Ryan Luke.

Moravian would tack on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when junior catcher Mike Roehtke led off with a single and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by sophomore center fielder Anthony Gaetaniellio.

The Greyhounds knocked out 11 hits in the second game with Gaetaniello going 3-for-4 and Roethke posting a 2-for-4 performance.

Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Luke led off with a single and even eventually scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Longernecker. However, the lead would be short lived as Susquehanna tied the game in the bottom half of the inning.

With the game still tied after the regulation seven innings, Moravian struck for a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. Gaetaniello had a one-out infield single, stole second base and scored on an RBI single to center field by senior shortstop Colin Case. After a fly ball moved Case to third, senior right fielder Matt Hanson connected on an RBI single to center to score Case.

The Crusaders would answer with two runs in the bottom of the eighth to keep the game going.

Moravian, playing in its fifth extra-inning game of the conference season so far this spring, would plate two runs in the top of the 11th to retake the lead. Junior first baseman Charles Savite  led off with a single and eventually crossed the plate on an RBI single off of Roethke's bat. Junior designated hitter Alex Bull, who had singled earlier in the inning, scored the final run on a ground out by Longernecker on another bunt play.

The Hounds had four pitchers see action on the mound in the second contest with freshman Ryan Kahn tossing the first 7.2 innings with five strikeouts. Junior Brett Wagner struck out two batters in 1.1 innings while freshman Adam Howard earned his first career victory with a strikeout in 1.1 innings of action. Guard tossed the final 0.2 innings for the Greyhounds to earn his second save of the afternoon.

Moravian and Susquehanna will finish out their three-game Landmark Conference series on Sunday, April 12 with a nine-inning game scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. in Selinsgrove.
