1960 MAC Champion Baseball Team to be Honored on April 18

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College will be honoring its 1960 Middle Atlantic Conference Champion baseball team on Saturday, April 18 at Gillespie Field between games of the Greyhounds scheduled Landmark Conference doubleheader versus Juniata College that begins at 1:00 p.m.

The 1960 squad was 13-4 on the season, and captured the MAC Northern Division title, setting up a game versus the University of Delaware on May 19 for the MAC title. The Greyhounds ended up defeating the Blue Hens, 4-3, to win the MAC Championship, the first conference title in school history.

Moravian was awarded a berth in the NCAA Tournament for winning the conference; however, the Greyhounds were unable to compete due to a rule at the time that did not allow freshmen to play in the NCAA Tournament. Without the freshmen eligible, the Greyhounds did not have enough players to field a team and did not play in the NCAA Tournament.

Head coach Harvey T.D. Gillespie '32, who Moravian's field is named for, assistant coach Gus Garcsar and players William Hershey '60, the team captain and most valuable player of the 1960 team, James Gano '62, Harold Rice '62 and Barry Shollenberger '65 have all been inducted into Moravian's Hall of Fame, and the entire team was also honored in 2000.
