Greyhounds Drop Non-Conference Game to Rowan

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team jumped out to an early lead but ended up dropping an 11-8 decision to visiting Rowan University in non-conference action at Gillespie Field Wednesday afternoon.

Moravian, now 13-14 on the year, had nine hits in the contest with junior center fielder Anthony Gaetaniello going 3-for-5. Senior first baseman Charles Savite had three RBIs in the game, and he became the school record holder in career at-bats with 576 in his career. Savite also made a career-high 19 putouts in the field.

The Greyhounds used six pitchers in the game with sophomore Ryan Kahn tossing the first three innings with a hit and a strikeout. Sophomore Bryan Schoch pitched to inning with two strikeouts while senior Anthony Zaloga recorded two strikeouts in 1.1 innings to raise his career total to 97. Senior Hunter Guard and sophomores Adam Howard and Nicholas Mazzella all saw action on the mound.

The Blue and Grey took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Gaetaniello led off with a single and scored on an RBI ground out by senior third baseman Alex Bull.

The Greyhounds added five runs in the bottom of the third inning for a 6-0 lead. Bull would come up with one out and the bases loaded when he was hit by a pitch to score Gaetaniello, who crossed the plate four times in the contest. Savite followed with a three-RBI single, and he would score on an RBI single by sophomore designated hitter Logan Welles.

Moravian added a run in the bottom of the fourth for a 7-0 advantage when Gaetaniello doubled with one out and scored on an RBI single off the bat of freshman right fielder Mike Mittl.

The Profs scored six times in the top of the sixth to cut the Hounds lead to a run, 7-6, but Moravian responded with a tally in the sixth when Gaetaniello raced home on an RBI single from freshman left fielder Austin Markowski.

Rowan scored five more times in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Thursday, April 14 in a non-conference game versus Keystone College beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Gillespie Field in Bethlehem.
