Hounds' Rally Falls Short at Alvernia

READING, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball squad rallied from a pair of deficits but was unable to come back a third time in a non-conference game at Alvernia University, falling 5-4 on the road Wednesday.

The Greyhounds had 10 hits in the game with senior first baseman Charles Savite going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs to reach 190 career hits, third in school history, in his 156th career game, tied for second all-time. Savite also had a double, a homer and an RBI in the game while freshman catcher Andrew Koenig had two RBIs for Moravian.

The Blue and Grey used three pitchers in the game with sophomore Bryan Schoch getting the start as he allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and a walk to go with two strikeouts in four innings of action. Sophomores Nicholas Mazzella and Dan Morrin each tossed two innings and recorded two strikeouts.

The Crusaders scored once in the second inning and once again in the third to take a 2-0 lead. Moravian tied the game in the top of the fourth inning when sophomore designated hitter Joey Maker drew a bases loaded walk, and Keonig hit into an RBI fielder's choice.

Alvernia moved back in front with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, and the Greyhounds answered again in the top of the sixth when Savite led off with inning with a solo home run, his third homer of the season, to knot the score at 3-3.

The Crusaders scored twice in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-3 advantage. Moravian cut that to a run in the top of the eighth when Savite led off with a double and Koenig ripped an RBI single down the left field line. However, the Hounds left a runner in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth innings and a total of 11 runners on base in the game.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, April 23 in a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Juniata College beginning at 1:00 p.m.
