Greyhounds Open 2017 Home Season with Non-Conference Win Over Arcadia

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team finally had a chance to play on Gillespie Field in its 16th game of the season as the Greyhounds defeated Arcadia University, 7-3, in non-conference action Thursday.

"I was impressed with how the players took the game one pitch at a time," commented Head Coach Paul Engelhardt. "The guys did a good job with that and that is what we're looking for, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. We're not banging the cover off the ball right now so we need to manufacture runs when we can, and we were able to do that today."

Moravian had eight hits in the victory with sophomores right fielder Austin Markowski and second baseman Tim Heard each going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore third baseman/pitcher Evan Kulig added two RBIs in the win.

The Greyhounds tried to get the pitching staff some work Thursday with eight pitchers making their way to the mound. Senior Ian Carbone made the start and recorded three strikeouts in two innings for his first win of the season while Kulig, juniors Dan Morrin, Bryan Schoch, Nicholas Mazzella and John Wiedmayer and sophomores Billy Roethke and Kevin Shields all tossed an inning with Mazzella, Kulig and Schoch each recording one strikeout.

Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when freshman outfielder Carmine Palummo drew a walk to lead off and scored on an RBI ground out from Kulig. Markowski added an RBI double later in the inning as senior center fielder Anthony Gaetaniello raced across the plate.

The Blue and Grey scored twice more in the second inning for a 4-0 edge. Heard led off with a triple down the right field line and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Palummo added an RBI single to score sophomore catcher Steve Lazicki.

Arcadia scored twice in the third inning and once in the fourth to pull within a run at 4-3 before the Greyhounds' pitching staff shut the door.

Moravian tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom half of the fifth frame when an RBI single by Kulig scored Gaetaniello for the 118th time in his career to move into a tie for sixth in school history. Sophomore designated hitter Mike Mittl added an RBI single to score Kulig.

The Hounds finished off the scoring with a run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Heard that chased Markowski across the plate.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action with a three-game Landmark Conference series at Juniata College on Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2 with action beginning on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with the first game of a doubleheader.
