Hounds Complete Series Sweep at Juniata for Fifth Straight Victory

HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team completed a Landmark Conference series sweep and won its fifth straight game Sunday as the Hounds defeated host Juniata College, 15-2.

The Greyhounds, who are now 7-12 overall and 4-3 in Landmark Conference action, pounded out 22 hits in the victory. Freshman second baseman Ian Csencsits was 5-for-5 with five RBIs, a triple and three runs scored while senior center fielder Anthony Gaetaniello went 4-for-6 to go along with two RBIs, two runs and a triple. Gaetaniello is now fourth in school history with 178 hits and 127 runs. Sophomore third baseman Evan Kulig was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs while sophomore shortstop Matt Stalter went 3-for-6 with a pair of runs and RBIs. Freshman outfielder Carmine Palummohad two hits in the game while sophomore right fielder Austin Markowski scored twice.

Junior John Wiedmayer made his first start of the season on the mound and earned his first victory of the spring as he allowed a pair of runs on two hits and three walks to go with seven strikeouts in six innings of action. Juniors Bryan Schoch and Nicholas Mazzella and sophomore Kevin Shields each tossed an inning in relief with Schoch and Mazzella each recording one strikeout and Schoch allowing two hits.

The Hounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Kulig that scored sophomore designated hitter Mike Mittl. Juniata answered with two runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.

Moravian would move back in front with a pair of runs in the second inning as Stalter and Mittl hit RBIs singles. The Greyhounds tacked on two runs in the top half of the third on a two-RBI single from Csencsits to extend the lead to 5-2.

The Greyhounds pushed seven runs across the plate in the top of the seventh inning to extend lead to 12-2. Junior Logan Welles connected on a pinch hit RBI double while Stalter followed with an RBI single. Gaetaniello ripped a two-RBI triple as he moved into a tie for ninth in school history with his seventh career triple. Kulig added an RBI single before Csencsits connected on a two-RBI triple to finish the scoring in the inning.

Moravian tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth inning to push the lead to 15-2. Csencsits had an RBI single for the Hounds while freshman Ian Luberti and sophomore Chase Rogers each had RBI singles in their first at-bats of the game.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Monday, April 3 in a non-conference game at Albright College beginning at 4:00 p.m. The contest was originally slated for Tuesday, April 4 but was moved up a day due to the weather forecast.
