Hounds Late Inning Rally At Rowan Comes Up Short

GLASSBORO, N.J. --- The Moravian College baseball team scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning and had a tying run at third base in the ninth before falling to Rowan University, 4-3, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

The Hounds collected nine hits in the contest with sophomore second baseman Tim Heard and junior first baseman Joey Maker both going 2-for-4. Heard had one of the Greyhounds' two extra base hits with a double and the other was a double by sophomore third baseman Evan Kulig. Maker and sophomore center fielder Austin Markowski each had an RBI in the contest.

Moravian used eight different pitchers in the game to get the staff some in-game work with each player tossing one inning. Junior John Wiedmayer made the start and had one strikeout while juniors Adam Howard and Dan Morrin each recorded one strikeout in their inning of action. Junior Ryan Kahn, sophomores Billy Roethke, Rhett Jacoby and Kevin Shields and Kulig all made appearances on the mound.

Rowan scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 4-0 lead.

The game would remain that way until the eighth inning when Moravian scored three times. Sophomore shortstop Matt Stalter reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a throwing error. Markowski followed with an RBI single through the left side to chase Stalter across the plate. Kulig connected on a double to put runners at second and third before Markowski raced home on a wild pitch. Maker would drive in Kulig with an RBI single through the left side.

Maker was left at second base to end the eighth inning, and Moravian has sophomore pinch hitter Andrew Koenig at third base with two outs in the ninth but was unable to get him home to tie the game. The Hounds left a total of nine runners on base in the contest with five in scoring position.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to begin a three-game Landmark Conference series on Friday, April 14 with a single, nine-inning game beginning at 3:30 p.m. in Madison, New Jersey.
