MADISON, N.J. --- The Moravian College baseball team split a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Drew University on Saturday, falling 3-1 in the first game before winning the night cap 17-4.
The Greyhounds, who are now 12-17 overall and 7-6 in Landmark Conference play, were limited to three hits in the opener, a double by sophomore outfielder Austin Markowski and singles from sophomore shortstop Matt Stalter and junior designated hitter Logan Welles.
Junior Ryan Kahn went the distance on the mound for the Blue and Grey in game one with three runs allowed on six hits and three walks to go with four strikeouts.
The Rangers scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Moravian would get on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning when sophomore second baseman Tim Heard drew a walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Stalter.
In the second game, sophomore Rhett Jacoby improved to 4-0 on the mound this season and became the 17th player in school history and third this season to reach 100 career strikeouts. Jacoby has six strikeouts to give him 103 for his career, and he gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk for his 11th career victory.
Moravian's bats came alive in the second game with 14 hits as Welles, Markowski and senior center fielder Anthony Gaetaniello each went 2-for-4. Welles added five RBIs while Markowski drove in three runs and Gaetaniello scored three times. Stalter and sophomore third baseman Evan Kulig were both 2-for-5 in the game.
The Hounds opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning on a two-RBI single as Stalter and Kulig both raced home after singles earlier in the frame.
Moravian pushed the lead to 5-0 with three runs in the second inning. Gaetaniello reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attend as freshman catcher Ian Luberti scored. Stalter followed with an RBI ground out to chase Heard across the plate while Markowski had an RBI single to score Gaetaniello.
The Blue and Grey pushed their lead to 6-0 with a run in the third inning when Heard hit into an RBI ground out that scored freshman left fielder Carmine Palummo.
Drew would score three times in the fifth inning to cut Moravian's lead in half but the Hounds responded with two runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Markowski and a passed ball to put the lead at 8-3.
Moravian scored nine times in the top of the seventh to extend the advantage to 17-3. Markowski drove in the first run with an RBI single and Kulig followed with an RBI single. Welles would empty the bases with a three-RBI double to left field, and he scored on an RBI single off of Palummo's bat. Gaetaniello connected on a two-RBI double with the bases loaded again, and Heard finished off the inning when he raced across the plate on a wild pitch.
Drew would get the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Monday, April 17 when the squad hosts Elizabethtown College to close out a Landmark Conference series with a nine-inning game beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Gillespie Field.
