Baseball Earns Split with Scranton on Senior Day

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team split a Landmark Conference doubleheader with The University of Scranton on Senior Day at Gillespie Field Saturday as the Greyhounds rebounded to take the second game, 2-1 in eight innings, after falling 4-0 in the opener.

The Hounds were limited to four hits in the first contest with sophomore right fielder Austin Markowski going 2-for-3.

Junior Ryan Kahn tossed a complete game in the opener with four runs, just two earned, on six hits to go with five strikeouts as he moved into fifth in school history with 129 career strikeouts.

The Royals scored a pair of runs on the second inning and added single runs in the fifth and sixth frames in the opener.

In the second game, sophomore Rhett Jacoby improved to 5-0 on the mound this season as he allowed an unearned run on seven hits to go with five strikeouts.

The Greyhounds would collect six hits in the contest with sophomore third baseman Evan Kulig going 3-for-4. Sophomore left fielder Mike Mittl was 2-for-3 in the win while Markowski had a 2-for-4 game.

Moravian opened the scoring in the second inning when Mittl hit a one-out single through the left side and moved to second on a single by freshman catcher Ian Luberti. After an out, senior center fielder Anthony Gaetaniello connected on an RBI single up the middle to chase Mittl home.

Scranton tied the contest with an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning, but neither team pushed another run across in the regulation seven innings.

After Jacoby set the side down in order in the top of the eighth, Moravian would win the game in the bottom of the frame. Markowski singled through the left side with one out, and Kulig followed with a single through the right side. Junior designated hitter Joey Maker drew a walk to load the bases, and junior first baseman Logan Welles was hit by a pitch on the second pitch of his at-bat to bring Markowski home with the winning run.

The Greyhounds and the Royals will close out their Landmark Conference series on Sunday, April 30 with a single, nine-inning game beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Gillespie Field.
