WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Moravian College baseball team concluded its 2017 season Sunday with a 4-2 loss at The Catholic University of America in Landmark Conference action as the Greyhounds traveled to Washington, D.C. to finish a halted game begun on March 18.
Play resumed on Sunday with the Greyhounds, who finish the spring at 15-21 overall and 9-9 in Landmark Conference play, leading the game 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning.
The Hounds finished the game with 11 hits with sophomore left fielder Austin Markowski going 2-for-3 Sunday after missing the first portion of the game with an injury back in March. Senior center fielder Anthony Gaetaniello was 2-for-5 over the two games to finish his career with 200 career hits, the fourth player to hit the milestone. Gaetaniello also finished his career as the school record holder with 65 stolen bases and was in the top five all-time in runs scored with 139, at-bats with 524 and games played with 154.
Junior Ryan Kahn started on the mound in March and picked up today, tossing six innings with three runs on six hits and three walks to go with a career-high 10 strikeouts as he moved into fourth in school history with 139 career strikeouts. Sophomore Rhett Jacoby pitched the final two innings with a run on one hit to go with a pair of strikeouts.
Moravian had taken a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning back in March as sophomore second baseman Tim Heard connected on an RBI single to score sophomore third baseman Evan Kulig.
The Greyhounds had Gaetaniello at second base with one out in the top of the fifth inning when the weather turned and the game was halted in March. Resuming in the same spot today, the Hounds were unable to score in the fifth; however, Moravian extended the lead to 2-0 in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by sophomore right fielder Mike Mittl that scored Markowski.
Catholic would push four runs across the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the lead. The Greyhounds stranded a pair of runs on base in the eighth and one in the ninth to end the season.
