Moravian Falls to Baldwin-Wallace in Snowbird Classic in Florida

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. --- The Moravian College baseball team jumped out to an early lead but ended up falling to Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio) College, 7-5, at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida Wednesday.

The Greyhounds had 10 hits in the game with junior third baseman Evan Kulig, senior designated hitter David Wodzisz and junior right fielder Mike Mittl each going 2-for-4.

Moravian sent six pitchers to the mound in the contest with junior Billy Roethke getting the start, and he allowed two runs on 10 hits and two walks in five innings of work. Freshman Johnny Apgar made his first career appearance with three runs, two earned, on a hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning while freshman Cade Stoneback allowed a run on two hits and a walk while facing three batters in his first collegiate appearance. Freshman Rodney Berger tossed a third of an inning with a run on two hits while junior Kevin Shields allowed a walk in an inning of action. Junior Tyler Caraway tossed the final inning with a walk and one strikeout.

The Hounds took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Junior left fielder Tim Heard drew a one-out, and Kulig had a single and junior center fielder Austin Markowski was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wodzisz connected on an RBI single to plate Heard, and an error on the plate allowed Kulig to race home.

The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the first inning.

The Blue and Grey would score three times in the top of the fourth inning to extend their advantage to 5-1. Sophomore second baseman Ian Csencsits drew a walk to start the inning and Mittl followed with a single. After a sacrifice bunt by senior first baseman Logan Welles, junior catcher Chase Rogers connected on an RBI single to score Csencsits. Freshman shortstop Michael Miceli ripped an RBI single that chased Mittl across the plate while Kulig had an RBI single that scored Rogers.

Baldwin-Wallace finished off the scoring with a run in the fifth inning, four runs in the sixth frame and one more in the seventh inning.

The Greyhounds will close out their trip to the Snowbird Classic on Friday, Match 9 when the squad plays Heidelberg (Ohio) University at 12:00 p.m. at South County Regional Park.
