Greyhounds Rally from 5-Run Deficit to Defeat Widener in Opening Game at RussMatt Invitational in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. --- The Moravian University baseball squad opened its Spring Break trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational by rallying from a five-run deficit to defeat Widener University, 12-10, Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Pride scored the opening run in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 edge
  • The Greyhounds answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to move ahead, 2-1. Junior shortstop Mason Fisher drew a walk and raced home from second base on an RBI single from senior first baseman Brett Moyer. Junior catcher Derek Holmes followed with an RBI single as Moyer crossed the plate
  • Moravian added a run in the bottom of the second inning to extend the advantage to 3-1 on an RBI single from junior second baseman Chris Pow that chased senior right fielder Robert Roman home with the bases loaded
  • Widener answered back in the top of the third frame with a pair of runs to knot the score at 3-3
  • The Blue and Grey took the lead right back in the bottom of the third as Holmes led off the inning with a solo home run, the second homer of his career, for a 4-3 edge
  • The Pride tied the game again in the top of the fifth with a run to make it 4-4
  • Widener moved in front for the first time since the first inning with one run in the top half of the sixth frame to take a 5-4 edge
  • The Pride broke the game open with a four-run seventh inning to take a 9-4 advantage
  • The Greyhounds would answer with eight runs in the bottom of the seventh frame to move back into the lead at 12-9. Senior third baseman David Bertolotti drove in the first run with an RBI single while Roman closed the gap to 9-7 with a two-RBI single. Fisher connected on a two-RBI double that knotted the score at 9-9, and an RBI, bases loaded walk by Moyer put the Blue and Grey back in front. Holmes finished off the inning with a two-RBI single
  • Widener would get a run in the top of the ninth to finish of the scoring

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 12 hits on the day with Holmes going 4-for-5 with four RBIs, two runs and his homer. Roman was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs and a pair of walks while Pow went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI
  • Moyer and Fisher each finished with two runs, two RBIs and a hit while Bertolotti had the Greyhounds' other hit and RBI. Sophomore center field Matt Madigan also scored a run
  • Senior Eddie Olsen made the start on the mound for the Blue and Grey, and he had one strikeout in six innings of work. Junior Garrison Koch earned the win in relief with a strikeout in two innings of action while sophomore Aaron Flyte picked up his first career save while tossing the final inning
