Greyhounds Sweep Drew on Senior Day at Gillespie Field

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball team completed a Landmark Conference series sweep of Drew University by winning both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, 8-4 and 11-7, as the Greyhounds celebrated Senior Day by running their winning streak to five games.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Rangers took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of second inning in the opener, and Drew added another run in the top of the third for a 2-0 edge
  • The Hounds got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth frame to knot the score at 2-2. Graduate student first baseman Brett Moyer led off the inning with a solo home run to right center, his second homer of the season and the fifth of his career. Junior second baseman Chris Pow followed with a single, and he came across the plate on an RBI groundout by freshman outfielder Nick Henry
  • The Rangers moved back in front, 3-2 with a run in the top of the fifth inning
  • Moravian answered back with a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth. Senior outfielder Robert Roman led off with a single and eventually tied the game when he raced home on a wild pitch. Moyer was able to draw a two-out single, and after the wild pitch that scored Roman, Pow drilled an RBI triple to center field to score Moyer
  • The Greyhounds scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to stretch the lead to 8-3. Roman drew a walk and scored on an RBI groundout by junior designated hitter Derek Holmes. Moyer followed with another RBI groundout as junior shortstop Mason Fisher raced home after getting on base on an error. Pow connected on another triple and sophomore catcher Connor Wengryn drew a walk before sophomore third baseman Paul Croyle hit a two-RBI triple to drive in Pow and Wengryn
  • Drew scored the final run of the contest in the top of the ninth inning
  • Senior Eddie Olsen made the start on the mound for the Blue and Grey, and he struck out six batters in his second complete game of the year as Olsen improved 3-2 on the season
  • Prior to the game, the Greyhounds honored their nine seniors – Moyer, Olsen, Roman, Leo Andreoli, David Bertolotti, Kevin Brandt, Elias Engelhardt, Nick Montone and Kyle Petsch 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Hounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the series finale. Fisher connected on a one-out single and moved to third on a double from Holmes. Moyer followed with a two-RBI double to center field as Fisher and Holmes crossed the plate
  • Drew cut the deficit in half with a run in the top second frame
  • Moravian extended its advantage to 5-1 with three runs in the bottom of the third. Roman and Fisher had hits to start the inning, and Holmes then ripped his second double of the game out to right field as Roman scored. Moyer reached on an error that allowed Fisher and Holmes to scamper home
  • The Rangers plated a run in the top of the fourth frame to make it 5-2
  • The Blue and Grey got the run back in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-2 edge. Fisher singled with an out and moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt before Holmes connected on an RBI double to left field
  • Drew picked up a run in the top of the fifth and two more in the sixth frame to make it a one-run game at 6-5
  • Moravian answered back in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead back to four at 9-5 with three more runs. Roman and Fisher both reached on errors. Holmes delivered an RBI single to score Roman while Moyer connected on an RBI single to bring in Fisher. Holmes raced home on a wild pitch for the final run of the inning
  • The Rangers picked up two more runs in the top of the seventh inning on a two-out home run
  • The Hounds tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 10-7 lead. Sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan put down a bunt single to start the inning, and he slide into home on a wild pitch
  • Moravian scored once more in the bottom of the eighth when Pow drew a leadoff single and raced around the bases on a pinch-hit RBI double by Bertolotti
  • Sophomore David Ciaccio started on the hill for the Greyhounds, and he struck out three batters in five innings for his second victory of the year. Junior Ethan Weber recorded two strikeouts in two innings of action while Petsch came in and pitched an inning to go with a pair of strikeouts. Brandt tossed the final inning for the Blue and Grey 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 28 hits on the day with Holmes going 5-for-8 with three RBIs, three runs and three doubles. Fisher was also 5-for-8 with five runs while Pow and Croyle were both 4-for-8 with Pow adding three runs, two triples and an RBI and Croyle contributing two RBIs and a triple
  • Moyer had three hits on the afternoon with six RBIs, two runs, a double and his homer while Roman and sophomore outfielder Patrick Benolken both had two hits with Roman scoring five times
  • The Hounds have won a season-best five straight games, and Moravian is 10-4 at Gillespie Field this year. However, Moravian plays just one of its final 10 games of the regular season at home.
