Hounds Come Up Short in Landmark Conference Doubleheader at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad came up short in both games of a Landmark Conference doubleheader Saturday to begin a three-game series at Susquehanna University, falling 10-7 and 7-0.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior outfielder Robert Roman singled to lead off the game and trotted home on a bases loaded RBI walk by graduate student first baseman Brett Moyer
  • Moravian stretched the advantage to 4-0 with a three-run fourth inning. Sophomore outfielder Patrick Benolken singled with one out, and sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan followed with a single. Roman connected on an RBI single to bring in Benolken and Madigan, and Roman raced home later in the inning on an error.
  • The River Hawks got onto the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the fourth, and Susquehanna plated five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead
  • The Blue and Grey answered with two runs in the top of the sixth to knot the score at 6-6. Benolken was hit by a pitch and Madigan singled before Roman reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Junior shortstop Mason Fisher hit an RBI sacrifice fly to bring in Benolken while Madigan came in on an RBI single by junior designated hitter Derek Holmes
  • Susquehanna also scored twice in the sixth inning to retake an 8-6 edge
  • Moravian pulled within a run at 8-7 in the top of the eighth when Fisher connected on a two-out single and raced around the bases on an RBI double from Holmes
  • The River Hawks added a pair of insurance runs in the top bottom half of the eighth
  • Senior Eddie Olsen made the start on the mound for the Greyhounds, and he registered four strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Junior Garrison Koch added a of strikeouts while pitching the final 3.1 innings

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The River Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning in the second contest, and Susquehanna added two runs in the third, a single run in the fifth and three runs in the eighth to finish off the scoring
  • Sophomore Aaron Flyte started on the hill for the Blue and Grey and had a pair of strikeouts in six innings of action. Junior Tyler Valentine tossed two-thirds of an inning while freshman Matt Snyder pitched the final 1.1 innings and had one strikeout 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 14 hits in the doubleheader with Holmes leading the way with four hits after going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a double in the opener
  • Madigan, Roman and junior second baseman Chris Pow all had two hits, and both Madigan and Roman scored twice
  • Benolken also crossed the plate twice while Fisher and Moyer both added one RBI
