McCarthy Named to D3football.com All-South Region 3rd Team

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. --- Moravian College junior defensive back Jimmy McCarthy has been selected to the 2014 D3football.com All-South Region Third Team for his performance this past season.

McCarthy has already been named to the 2014 Centennial All-Conference First Team this fall after he moved to defensive back during preseason camp. He spent his first two seasons in Bethlehem at wide receiver including his freshman campaign when McCarthy was selected as the Centennial Conference Rookie of the Year. McCarthy led the Moravian defense and the Centennial Conference in 2014 with five interceptions, and he had a total of 12 passes defended and 46 tackles with 37 solo stops.

McCarthy did a little of everything for the Hounds this season, holding for extra-points including running in a two-point conversion in a victory at Juniata College, serving as the Greyhounds' punter for the second half of the season and averaging 30.1 yards per punt on 33 kicks with eight inside the 20-yard line and three fair caught, returning eight punts for 45 yards and running back 15 kickoffs for 251 yards. In Moravian's contest at Johns Hopkins University in September, McCarthy became the school record holder in career kickoff returns and yardage and heads into his senior season in 2015 with marks of 75 kickoff returns and 1,532 return yards.

"Jimmy was asked to do a bunch of different things this season from switching sides of the ball in the preseason to taking on the punting duties midway through the year, and he did it without any complaints and ended up having an outstanding season," commented Head Coach Jeff Pukszyn. "Jimmy is a phenomenal athlete, and he works hard all week to be ready for Saturdays and help his teammates anyway he can. It is a tremendous honor and says a lot about his character for Jimmy to earn All-Region honors after making the switch in positions."

McCarthy is the seventh Moravian football player to earn D3football.com All-Region honors since the website first started selecting All-Region teams in 2005. This year, there were a record 984 nominations across the country including 252 in the South region. The South region had 79 players named to three All-Region teams. The All-South Region teams included eight players from the Centennial Conference with four from Johns Hopkins, two from Muhlenberg College, one from Ursinus College and McCarthy.

The Greyhounds posted a 5-5 mark this fall, and the Hounds were tied for fifth in the Centennial Conference with a 4-5 record.
