Greyhounds Win John Makuvek Cup For 2nd Straight Fall

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College golf team captured the John Makuvek Cup for the second straight year Tuesday afternoon as the Greyhounds defeated DeSales University and Muhlenberg College on the Weyhill Course at Saucon Valley Country Club.

The Greyhounds had a team score of 297 to finish 30 strokes ahead of the Mules, who had defeated Moravian by 14 strokes on Monday in the Muhlenberg Invitational, and 38 strokes ahead of the Bulldogs. This is the fourth year of the Makuvek Cup with Moravian winning the last two, and the victory also gives the Blue and Grey their first point in the 2016-17 Matte Award standings.

On the course, senior Anthony Beltrami and junior Kevin Kunkle each fired one-over par rounds of 73 to tie for first of the 14 golfers in action. Beltrami, who posted his career low at Moravian, had four birdies and 10 pars in his round while Kunkle had one birdie and 15 pars. Sophomore Joe Rochelle had a career-best round of 75 that included two birdies and 10 pars to finish third while junior Tyler Smith had a 76 for the day with three birdies and 11 pars that placed him fourth. Senior Dan Leppert was seventh overall with a round of 78 that featured three birdies and six pars.

"I'm really proud of how all the guys played today," stated Head Coach Kevin Edwards. "Both Anthony and Kevin played really solid rounds. Joe has been close all fall so it was nice to see him come in with a really good score. Tyler played a really good round as well as Dan. Hopefully this will build our confidence as we go into the rest of our fall events.

"Winning this event is always special because of Coach Makuvek and everything he has done and still does for the program," finished Edwards.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Monday, October 17 at the Franklin & Marshall College Invitational being played at the Bent Creek Country Club.
