Hounds Win John Makuvek Cup for 3rd Straight Year; Smith Earns Victory on 1st Playoff Hole

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's golf team captured the John Makuvek Cup for the third straight year Thursday with a team score of 302, finishing four strokes ahead of host and rival Muhlenberg College on the Lehigh Country Club Course. DeSales University finished third with a 316.

The victory was the Greyhounds' third in the five years of the John Makuvek Cup after Muhlenberg won the initial tournament and DeSales captured the title in the second year.

Moravian senior Tyler Smith captured the individual win with a birdie on the first playoff hole. Smith and Adam Sutovich of DeSales each had three-over par rounds of 73 on the par 70 course at the Lehigh Country Club and headed back to the first hole where Smith birdied for the victory. Smith's round included one birdie and 13 pars as he shot a 35 on the back nine. Senior Kevin Kunkle was third in the 14-player field with a four-over par round of 74 that included two birdies and 11 pars while junior Joe Rochelle was tied for sixth with a round of 77 which included 12 pars. Freshman Victor Tavares carded a 78 with 13 pars to finish in a tie for eighth while junior Kody Long was 11th with a 79 that included two birdies and eight pars.

The Greyhounds will close out the fall portion of their 2017-18 season on Monday, October 16 when the squad heads to the Franklin & Marshall College Invitational at the Bent Creek Country Club with tee-off set for 12:00 p.m.
