Spring 2017 Update - May 25, 2017

The 2017 spring golf season was challenging for the greyhounds. The season started off with the first two events being cancelled due to weather pushing the first event back to our spring invitational on April 5th at Southmoore Golf Course in Bath, PA. The team played without junior captain Tyler Smith who struggled all spring with a back injury. Overall the team played well but we definitely missed having Tyler in the line up. The next event was the spring portion of the Empire 8 Championship at Hershey CC. The team finished first in the spring portion ahead of perennial powerhouse St. John Fisher with a 2-day total of 642 lead by Tyler Smith on Friday with a low score of 74 (3 strokes better than the next competitor) and then by Kody Long on Saturday with a score of 73 (again 3 strokes better than the next competitor).

The last event of the year was the Glenmaura Invitational at Glenmaura National Golf Club. The team played without the low 3 averages due to injury and class conflicts. This gave the rest of the team a chance to play up in the lineup and gave them all valuable experience. The team was lead by sophomore Joe Rochelle with a 2-day total of 147, led by a career low 72 in the opening round.

Overall for the 2016-2017 season the team averaged 317 strokes per event and 79.4 per player led by junior Tyler Smith with a 76,8 stroke average, which was the only player under 80 for the season.

The team backed up a great fall semester in the classroom with another great semester with a team GPA of 3.2.

We are very excited about the 2017-2018 season with a number of good freshmen coming in, including Thomas Lakata (Central Catholic HS) and Victor Tavares (Nazareth HS).

Winter 2017 Update - February 12, 2017

The golf team had a very strong fall season that included a win at the Moravian Fall Invitational and then a win at the John Makuvek Cup with a team low score of 397 for the fall. This was the team's second consecutive victory in the competition between Moravian, Muhlenberg and DeSales. The John Makuvek Cup was started four years ago and is named after the Greyhounds long time golf coach, John Makuvek.

Junior Tyler Smith led the team in the fall with a 76.1 scoring average with a low round of 69 at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational. Senior Dan Leppert and Junior Kevin Kunkle where tied for second on the team in scoring with averages of 79.1 for the fall. Senior Anthony Beltrami finished with an 80.3 average followed by sophomore Kody Long with an 81.5 average and fellow sophomore Joe Rochelle with an 82.7 average. As a team the Greyhounds averaged 314.9 for the fall.

To get ready for the spring season the team will take their annual spring trip to Orlando, Florida to play and practice. The Greyhound golfers open up the spring season on Tuesday, March 28th at the Eastern University Spring Invitational at St. David's Golf Club. The Moravian Invitational will be held at Southmoore Golf Course in Bath, PA on Wednesday, April 5th.

The team also excelled in the classroom this fall with the highest male team GPA with a 3.439. In addition to this Tyler Smith and Kody Long earned Empire 8 President's list honors for having GPA's over 3.75 for the fall.

Summer 2015 Update - July 24, 2015

With a strong 2nd place finish in the Empire 8 last spring with freshman Tyler Smith earning Rookie of the Year honors the future looks very good for the program.  We have all top 7 players returning including senior captains, Evan Dickinson and Jim Maru, Senior James Lobb, Junior Dan Leppert and Sophomores Kevin Kunkle and Tyler Smith.  Last year's team had 4 players average under 80 and a team average under 315.  In addition to the returning players we have 3 freshmen joining the program this fall including Kody Long from Salisbury, PA, Joe Rochelle from Quakertown, PA and Zachary Balga from Bethlehem, PA.

The team is very excited about the upcoming fall season which opens on Monday, September 14th with the Moravian Invitational at Woodstone Country Club in Danielsville, PA followed by the fall portion of the Empire 8 Championship onSeptember 18th & 19th and a new venue.  Timber Banks Golf Club in Baldwinsville, NY.

We had our annual golf team tournament at Woodstone Country Club on Saturday, July 11th with a number of former player and supporters of the program raising money for this year's team.  Look for more updates this fall once we get our season going.

Fall 2014 Update - November 4, 2014

The fall season went pretty well for the golf team highlighted by a win at the Alvernia Invitational held at Ledge Rock Golf Club. The Greyhounds shot a season low 302 to take first place led by freshman Kevin Kunkle with a 72 winning the individual medalist honors. Along with the first place at Alvernia, the Greyhounds have also finished 2nd in 3 events this fall including the fall portion of the Empire 8 Championship held at Yahnundasis Golf Club in Utica, NY shooting a 2 round total of 629. This puts the Greyhounds 13 shots behind nationally-ranked St. John's Fisher College heading into the spring event at Hershey Country Club, April 18th & 19th.

I am very pleased with the team's performance this fall especially with the addition of freshmen Kevin Kunkle and Tyler Smith. We currently have a team average of 313 with 3 players averaging under 80, Freshman Kevin Kunkle (75.25), Junior Evan Dickinson (78.5) and Junior Jim Maru (79.5). The top five is rounded out by Freshman Tyler Smith and Sophomore Aaron Brown both with an 82 average. The team and I are very excited about the upcoming spring season looking to build on some of the momentum we have from the fall. Moravian will host their spring invitational at Woodstone Country Club in Danielsville, PA on Thursday, April 9th.
