Dietz Nets Career High as Greyhounds Defeat Delaware Valley in Overtime

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's basketball squad won its second straight game, defeating visiting Delaware Valley University, 78-75 in overtime, in non-conference action in Johnston Hall Tuesday evening.

How It Happened

  • The Aggies scored first while junior guard Nate Dougherty hit a lay-up to knot the game at 2-2. Freshman forward Nate Santiago drained a three-pointer to give the Hounds a 7-4 edge four and a half minutes into action. Leading 12-8, the Greyhounds went on a 12-4 run to stretch the advantage to 24-12 with 7:36 to go in the first half
  • Moravian still had an 11-point lead, 38-27, after two free throws from sophomore guard C.J. Weber with 2:42 before the intermission. However, the Blue and Grey would score just two points the rest of the half as Delaware Valley closed to within three points at 40-37 as the teams headed to the locker room
  • The Aggies scored the first three points of the second half to knot the score at 40-40, the first tie since the contest was 4-4, and Delaware Valley took its first lead of the night at 44-42 on a pair of free throws with 17:32 to play. The Aggies had a three-point edge until Weber tied the contest at 48-48 with a three-pointer, and the Hounds moved back in front, 56-54, on a three-pointer by Dougherty with 8:15 to go
  • Delaware Valley responded and would take a 69-60 lead with 3:39 remaining in regulation. Moravian netted nine points in the final 2:04 including a lay-up from Dougherty off of a steal with 14 seconds on the clock that tied the game at 69-69. Each team would have a possession end in a turnover to force the overtime
  • Sophomore guard Alex Dietz netted two free throws to start the scoring in overtime as the squads traded baskets. With the contest knotted at 75-75, senior guard Danny Cooper gave the Greyhounds the lead for good with 35 seconds left on a lay-up. Sophomore forward Thomas Abato sank a free throw with 11 seconds remaining to finish the scoring

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had four players in double figures led by Dietz, who netted a career-best 23 points. In fact, Dietz had surpassed his previous career high of 11 points by the intermission with 12 points in the first half. Dietz also added five rebounds and three assists
  • Dougherty tossed in 15 points to go with five rebounds and a pair of blocked shots while Cooper contributed 13 points to go with career highs of seven rebounds, six assists and two steals
  • Weber was in double digits for the first time in his career with 11 points while Santiago added seven points, five boards and a team-high three blocked shots
  • Abato led the Hounds on the boards with a career-best nine rebounds to go with five points while sophomore forward Mike DiPietro added six rebounds, four points and two assists. Sophomore forward James Thompson pulled down six rebounds while sophomore guard Justin LaBrusciano saw his first action of the season and had one steal
  • Moravian shot 23-for-63 from the floor (36.5 percent), and the Hounds were 24-for-29 at the foul line (82.8 percent) while sinking eight three-pointers
  • The overtime win for the Greyhounds was their first since a 90-72 overtime victory at Elizabethtown College on December 7, 2019
