Men's Lacrosse Falls to Muhlenberg in Virginia

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- The Moravian College men's lacrosse team opened its Spring Break trip to Virginia with a 14-6 loss to rival Muhlenberg College Wednesday afternoon in a match played at Christopher Newport University.

Sophomore attacks Jack Gozzard and Mark Laratta each had a goal and an assist for the Greyhounds, who are 1-1 on the season, while sophomore attack James Carroll, sophomore midfielders Hayden DuPont and Austin Adams and freshman attack Cade Siddron each found the goal once.

Moravian freshman goalie MacLean Lincoln made 18 saves to go with three ground balls while sophomore defender John Polich had a team-high four ground balls to go with a pair of caused turnovers. DuPont was 4-for-10 on face-offs with three ground balls while Laratta and freshman long stick midfielder Jimmy Schicke both scooped up three ground balls. Sophomore defender Brian Biase had a pair of caused turnovers for the Greyhounds while sophomore midfielder Rick Guerra won three face-offs.

The Mules scored three goals in the first 88 seconds of the match and led 4-0 before Laratta scored with 23 seconds remaining in the first quarter to cut the deficit to 4-1 after 15 minutes of action. Muhlenberg netted three more goals to start the second quarter before Carroll, Adams and Siddron scored in the final 4:09 of the half to send the squads to the intermission with the Mules leading, 7-4.

Muhlenberg scored the only two goals of the third quarter to extend its lead to 9-4, and the Mules added four more goals in the fourth quarter to push the advantage to 14-4. Gozzard and DuPont scored 27 seconds apart with just over three minutes to play as the Blue and Grey cut the deficit to 14-6.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, March 11 in a non-conference match at Ferrum (Va.) College beginning at 1:00 p.m.
