Hounds Net 10 Second Half Goals to Rally Past Wilkes

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's lacrosse team scored 10 goals in the second half to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 13-8 victory over visiting Wilkes University in non-conference action Saturday on John Makuvek Field.

"We're a second half team apparently," noted Head Coach Dave Carty. "We got into a run and gun match with them and that's not our game. In the second half, we played our game and hit shots."

Sophomore attack James Carroll led the Greyhounds with five goals while sophomore attack Mark Laratta had three goals and three assists to go with five ground balls. Sophomore midfielder Austin Adams also netted a hat trick for the Blue and Grey while freshman attack Cade Siddron added a goal and an assist. Sophomore attack Jack Gozzard found the back of the goal once while sophomore midfielder AJ Cioffi and freshman midfielder Peter Degnan each had an assist.

Sophomore goalie Kurt Dick made 12 saves and a pair of ground balls in 58 minutes of action for his first win of the year while senior Michael Smith played the final two minutes. Sophomore midfielder Rick Guerra was 9-for-18 on face-offs with seven ground balls while sophomore midfielder Hayden DuPont was 4-of-7 on face-offs with three ground balls. Sophomore defender Brian Biase scooped up a team-high eight ground balls while forcing three turnovers, and sophomore defender John Polich added six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman long stick midfielder Jimmy Schicke had five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Carroll opened the scoring at 10:12 of the first but the Colonels tied the match just nine seconds later. Wilkes added a late goal to lead 2-1 after the first 15 minutes of action. A man-up goal gave the Colonels a 3-1 lead before Adams found the goals with just over six minutes left in the first half. Wilkes scored two more times including a man-down goal before a man-up goal by Gozzard set the halftime score at 5-3 for the Colonels.

Carroll scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half with his man-up goal at 10:28 tying the contest. Adams and Siddron scored to give Moravian a 7-5 lead, and goals from Laratta and Carroll had the Greyhounds leading 9-7 after 45 minutes of play. Carroll opened the fourth quarter with a goal, and after the Colonels pulled within two goals at 10-8, Laratta netted two more tallies and Adams had one to set the final score.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, April 1 in a Landmark Conference match at Susquehanna University beginning at 1:00 p.m.
