Greyhounds Hold Off Marywood for Victory in 2021 Home Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's lacrosse had a six-goal lead heading into the fourth quarter and held on for a 19-17 non-conference victory over Marywood University in the Greyhounds 2021 home opener on John Makuvek Field Saturday.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by junior midfielder Zach Bergeron. The teams traded goals until the Pacers took a 5-4 lead with just 1:22 left in the first quarter. Moravian would get goals from senior Cade Siddron and junior attack Connor James in the final 11 seconds to give the Hounds a 6-5 lead after 15 minutes of action.
  • Senior midfielder Timothy Dwyer scored first for the Blue and Grey in the second quarter. After Marywood netted a goal, junior attack Griffin LeBlond and James each scored twice as Moravian moved ahead 11-6. The Pacers added one more goal to set the score at 11-7 for the Greyhounds at the intermission
  • Moravian netted the first three goals of the third quarter to push the edge to 14-7 before Marywood netted three straight goals. Freshman attack Trevor Dzama each scored in the final 2:36 of the half to give the Greyhounds a 16-10 lead heading into the final period
  • Siddron would net a man-up goal at the 10:03 mark as Moravian led 17-12 and LeBond scored the Greyhounds' final goal with 3:57 to go as the Blue and Grey led 19-14. Marywood made it interesting with three markers in the final 1:57 to pull within two before the clock ran out

Inside the Numbers

  • James netted a career-high eight goals, the second most in a match in program history, and he added an assist for nine points
  • James took 12 shots in the match and Siddron fired 19 attempts as the Greyhounds took 55 shots on the afternoon
  • Siddron and LeBlond also had hat tricks with LeBlond adding two assists and Siddron contributing one
  • Sophomore goalie Sean DeMott had eight saves and a pair of ground balls in his second straight start
  • Junior face-off specialist Ben Walek was 23-for-39 on face-offs, tying T.J. Hirsch's school record of 23 face-off wins set against Mt. Ida College on March 10, 2007. Walek added 17 ground balls, which are for the second most in a match in program history
