Moravian Rallies From Early Deficit to Run Past Marywood in Non-Conference Action

SCRANTON, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse squad trailed 3-1 with just over four minutes to play in the first quarter before netting nine straight goals to post a 14-7 non-conference victory at Marywood University Wednesday evening. 

How It Happened

  • The Pacers scored the first two goals of the match before freshman midfielder Steven Salica got the Greyhounds on the scoreboard. Marywood netted another goal while senior attack Connor James scored twice in the final 1:28 of the first quarter to tie the contest at 3-3 after the first 15 minutes of action
  • The Blue and Grey scored the only five goals in the second quarter to head to the intermission with an 8-3 advantage. Five different Hounds scored in the period with sophomore attack Brennan Fluehr scoring a man-down to make it a 7-3 lead while senior midfielder Nick Nolder had given Moravian the lead for good at the 11:57 mark
  • The Greyhounds added three more goals in the third quarter including a man-up tally from James while Marywood had one goal as the Hounds led 11-4 after 45 minutes of play
  • Salica pushed the advantage to 12-4 with another goal just 54 seconds into the fourth quarter. Moravian would also get a man-up goal from senior midfielder Kevin Berlin in the period, and Nolder finished the scoring for the Blue and Grey with three and a half minutes to play

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had seven different goal scorers with James leading the way as he contributed four goals, two assists and four ground balls. Salica added three goals, an assist and a pair of ground balls while Nolder had three goals
  • Senior attack Griffin LeBlond and senior midfielder Zach Bergeron each had a goal, an assist and two ground balls. Berlin also netted a goal and had three ground balls while Fluehr added a goal
  • Sophomore attack Trevor Dzama dished out a trio of assists while junior midfielder Shane Cassel had one assist and two ground balls
  • Freshman goalie Thomas Lee made his first career start for the Greyhounds and registered nine saves for his first career victory
  • Graduate student defender Jimmy Schicke led the Hounds' defense with three caused turnovers to go with four ground balls while sophomore defender Jacob Stetson added four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Freshman defender Jason Levy and freshman midfielder Aaron Judge each had three ground balls
  • Senior face-off specialist Ben Walek was 12-for-19 in the face-off circle to go with a team-high six ground balls
  • Moravian finished the contest with a 52-31 advantage in shots, a 46-37 edge in ground balls and a 13-4 advantage in caused turnovers. The Hounds were 18-for-23 on clears while winning 12-of-22 face-offs in the match
