Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Penn State Berks 4-0

Bethlehem, Pa.---Moravian College men's soccer looked to gain their second win of the season against Penn State Berks and the Greyhounds delivered with a decisive 4-0 win on the HUB Quad Wednesday afternoon.

In the 20th minute, freshman midfielder Brett Lubben put the Hounds on the scoreboard with his first collegiate goal off of a one touch shot set up from sophomore midfielder Robert McKinley.

"It was good to finally get on the board as much as we did, we needed a good win. I was happy with the four goals it will give us the confidence going into conference play this weekend," stated Head Coach Todd Ervin.

The second half found three different Greyhounds adding to the cause. Junior defender Austin Niekrasz hit a shot from the 18 yard line that was unlucky, but gave freshman forward Chris Cella his second goal of the season, finishing inside the six off the keepers save in the 58th minute.

Junior midfielder Seth Reynolds took a play out of Cella's book, being in the right place at the right time in the 84th minute as he followed up a shot that proved too much for the keeper to hold on to by teammate Saul Marcial advancing the score 3-0 in favor of the Hounds.

Marcial would run onto a ball played over the top of the defense by sophomore defender Ian Larimer and take it right to goal for his first marker of the season in the 88th minute giving the Blue and Grey the final score of 4-0.

"Defensively, it's always nice to not give up any goals. We toyed with some players in the back and like what we saw back there and is certainly a benefit for us to have as many options as we do. I expect them to keep up this play and earn a few more clean sheets," commented Ervin.

The defense showed a strong front winning most of the 50-50 balls out of the air and protecting the goal. Junior goalkeeper Brian Boland recorded his second shutout of the season making seven saves and earning the second win of the season.

The men's soccer team will be on the road this weekend for their first Landmark Conference match of the season on Saturday, September 20 with a kick off time of 1:00 p.m. against Goucher College.
