BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's soccer team scored in the first five minutes of action and made the goal stick up as the Greyhounds defeated New Jersey City University, 1-0, in a non-conference match on John Makuvek Field Wednesday evening.
"It was a good win against one of our former coaches," stated Head Coach Todd Ervin stated of defeating his former assistant coach Joe Cullen for the past two seasons. Cullen became the head coach at NJCU in June. "The win also keeps our momentum going as we head into another key conference match this week that we need to challenge for a postseason berth.
The Greyhounds, now 6-4-2 on the season, scored on the opening shot of the match as junior midfielder Connor Phillips tapped in a crossing pass from sophomore forward Koshane Marshall just 4:36 into action. The goal was Phillips' team-leading seventh of the fall.
The Blue and Grey nearly added a late goal in the 79th minute when senior forward Saul Marcial had an empty net to shoot at before a Gothic Knight defender cleared the shot away as it neared the goal line.
Junior goalie Bryan Yaskowski made the lead stand up as he posted two saves in his second shutout of the season. Moravian had a 20-7 advantage in shots with ten in each half and a total of 10 shots on goal.
