Guarino's OT Winner Gives Hounds a 2-1 Win at DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's soccer team scored with 12 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and then had sophomore defender Michael Guarino net his first career goal with 24 seconds left in the first overtime to give the Greyhounds a 2-1 overtime win at DeSales University in non-conference action Thursday.

The Hounds, who improve to 8-4-3 overall, were playing their second match in under 24 hours and just two starters saw action in the victory Thursday over the Bulldogs.

Guarino had the first shot of the match wide of the goal in the fifth minute before sophomore forward Kenny Fellows fired a shot on goal in the 13th minute. However, it was DeSales that would strike first in the 22nd minute for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore defender Matthew Clayton put a shot on net in the 44th minute but Moravian trailed 1-0 at the intermission.

Freshman midfielder Jack Dugan, one of the Greyhounds' normal starters to see action, had a shot on goal 1:37 into the second half while sophomore forward Reed McLaughin and freshman midfielder Dylan Evande had shots on goal in the 54th and 55th minutes but the Greyhounds were unable to break through.

Freshman goalie Ian Walls saw his first action of the season for the Hounds in the second half, and he had two key saves in the 68th minute to keep it a one-goal match. Walls had three saves in 54 minutes of action while freshman Matthew Miller had two saves in the first half for the Blue and Grey.

McLaughlin drilled another shot on goal in the 84th minute but Moravian was unable to break through until a scramble in front of the net in the waning seconds as Clayton booted the loose ball into the net for his first career goal with 12 ticks on the clock.

In the overtime, each team found a shot on net with Walls making a save in the 97th minute and freshman midfielder Mohammed Sharifpour hitting the DeSales keeper in the 98th minute.

The Greyhounds would get back-to-back corner kicks in the 100th minute with senior midfielder and co-captain Robert McKinley taking both kicks. On his second kick, McKinley, who has played in 14 of 15 contests this fall, found Guarino open for the game-winning goal.

Moravian is scheduled to close out the 2016 regular season on Saturday, October 29 in a Landmark Conference match versus Susquehanna University beginning at 3:30 p.m. on John Makuvek Field. The Greyhounds need a victory to clinch a berth in the 2016 Landmark Conference Tournament, which would be the program's first postseason berth since 2003.
