Sturza’s Double-OT Goal Lifts Greyhounds Over Dickinson

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's soccer program kicked off the 2021 season with a 1-0 double overtime victory over Dickinson College in non-conference action on John Makuvek Field Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

• The Greyhounds and Dickinson each had opportunities to score in the first half but went into halftime with a scoreless tie.
• Moravian was able to put a few shots on goal, but we would end regulation still knotted at 0-0.
• The Blue & Grey had one opportunity in the first overtime period, but after 100 minutes, we would be tied at 0-0, heading into double overtime.
• Just two minutes into the second overtime session, sophomore Reed Sturza connected on a pass from junior Carson Snyder and buried in the net for the game-winning goal. The Greyhounds would defeat the Red Devils 1-0.

Inside the Numbers

• Sturza's goal was his first career goal with the Blue & Grey and Snyder's assist was also a Moravian first.
• Moravian took a total of 10 shots with seven of them going on goal, with Dickinson taking seven shots and two on goal.
• Graduate student Michael Bone led the Greyhounds defensively, stopping the only two shots on goal in 101:18 minutes of action. Bone earned his fourth-career shutout and received the victory in the decision, putting him at 1-0 this year.
• The Greyhounds earned a total of seven corner kicks in the contest, including one in the first overtime, with Dickinson earning five in the match.

• "It was a great game," stated Head Coach Bob Wilkinson. "Dickinson has a really good team. We went back and forth all game. We knew we'd create some chances late in the game, we're confident that we're playing well enough to win, if we could find one more chance.  And then Alec Aloia got a good run down the sideline, played a cross ultimately with Reed Sturza scoring a goal. So, I think just the way we hung throughout the game is a positive the defense, those three center backs, Mike Bone, in the net, played really well. They're the biggest positives for sure. They work hard and practice. They've been around for a little while now with some veterans, so they know what they've been there before. Just the fact the home crowd was there on Makuvek Field, the team was super excited. I think it's one of these days it's good for everybody. It's good for us, it's obviously good for our team, but it's good Moravian and all the people that work here."
