BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's soccer team ended their non-conference match versus Montclair State University in a 1-1 draw in overtime on John Makuvek Field Wednesday evening due to multiple lightning delays.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds first shot of the game resulted in a goal from sophomore Reed Sturza in the 7th minute of the game, by making a move in the 18-yard box and blasted a shot over the goalkeepers' hands.
  • Montclair State recorded a few shots on goal before finding the equalizer in the 40th minute to tie the match at 1-1.
  • The Greyhounds and Red Hawks had multiple opportunities in the second half, but both squads were unable to find the back of the net. They would head into overtime still tied at 1-1.
  • Just four minutes into overtime, the squad would head into a weather delay due to lightning in the area. Once the rain subsided, the teams returned to the pitch to begin to warmup before more lightning was in the vicinity, concluding the contest, ending in a 1-1 draw with 5:15 still to play in the first overtime.

Inside the Numbers

  • Sturza, who was named the Landmark Conference Offensive Athlete of the Week on Monday, scored his sixth goal of the season. This is also the third match in a row that Sturza has found the back of the net.
  • Senior Mason LeSage got his third start in net tonight and led the Greyhounds defensively with seven saves in 95 minutes of action. The draw puts LeSage's record at 1-1-1 this year.
  • The Greyhounds were outshot by a narrow margin of 14-13 and a earned just two corner kicks to Montclair's five.

Quotable

  • "Exciting game at Mak Field tonight," exclaimed Head Coach Bob Wilkinson. "We know how good Montclair is and we needed a good start. It was big getting the first goal and it gave us a lot of confidence. Montclair tied it late in the first half which made for a great second half. Both teams really battled in the second half without a goal. We were looking forward to a great overtime finish but ultimately the weather won out as lightning ended the contest. I was really happy with how the team competed tonight and look forward to getting back on the field tomorrow to prepare for the weekend."
