Hounds Close 2015 Regular Season with 6-3 Win over Muhlenberg

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's tennis team closed out its 2014-15 regular season with a 6-3 non-conference victory over rival Muhlenberg College at Hoffman Courts Friday afternoon.

The win improves the Greyhounds' overall record to 11-6 on the season, and it was the first victory over the Mules since the 2010-11 campaign.

"It was a real good team win, and taking all three doubles was really big," commented Head Coach Art Smith. "I am excited because this is my first victory over Muhlenberg in tennis since I started coaching at Moravian. My last victory over them in tennis was in the late sixties as a player."

The Greyhounds would sweep the doubles action for a 3-0 start to the match. Sophomore Dan Schmucker and freshman David Wilson earned the first point with an 8-2 victory at third doubles. Juniors Matt Tuorto and John Wylie were done next with a 9-7 triumph at first doubles while senior Lewis Cooper and sophomore Giovanni Lombardi finished the sweep with another 9-7 win at second doubles.

Schmucker was the first to come off the courts in singles action as hear earned a win at fourth singles due to an injury. The Mules won the next two matches to finish at third and fifth singles to cut the Hounds lead to 4-2. Junior C.J. Widdifield captured the winning point for the Blue & Grey with an 6-1, 7-5 victory at sixth singles. Tuorto would make the Greyhounds lead 6-2 with a three-set 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) triumph at first singles before Muhlenberg won the final contest at second singles as Wylie had forced a third set in the match.

Moravian, now 11-6 on the season, will return to action on Tuesday, April 28 in a Landmark Conference Semifinal match at Goucher College starting at 3:00 p.m.
