Greyhounds Top Stevenson to Advance to ECAC DIII Outdoor Championship Match

GLENSIDE, Pa. --- The top seeded Moravian College men's tennis team outlasted the rain and fourth seeded Stevenson University by a score of 5-3 to advance to the 2016 ECAC Division III Outdoor Championship match Sunday afternoon, the second straight year the Greyhounds will play for the title.

Moravian, now 13-6 on the year, is the defending ECAC champion and will play second seed The United States Merchant Marine Academy in the championship match at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 15 at host and third seed Arcadia University.

The match between the Greyhounds and the Mustangs started on Saturday, May 14 and was tied at 2-2 with five singles matches still to complete when rain suspended the match to 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Stevenson had a 2-1 lead after doubles with Moravian picking up an 8-1 victory at third doubles from the tandem of freshmen Peter Demyan and Isaac Schefer. Seniors Matt Tuorto and John Wylie nearly gave the Hounds a lead in doubles action but fell 9-8 (8-6) at first doubles.

Demyan evened the match at 2-2 with a straight sets win at sixth singles before rain suspended the contest.

When action resumed Sunday morning, Wylie earned a straight sets win at second singles, and senior C.J. Widdifield had a straight sets victory at fourth singles for a 4-2 lead. Stevenson earned a three-set win at third singles before Schefer clinched the match with a three-set win at fifth singles.
