PHILADELPHIA, Pa. --- Senior David Cariello is in sixth place after the opening day of the decathlon in the 120th Penn Relays being hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at historic Franklin Field.
Cariello has scored 3,339 points through the first half of the competition. He started Tuesday with a time of 11.64 seconds in the 100-meter dash for 723 points, and then he had a leap of 6.43 meters (21 feet, 0.75 inches) in the long jump for another 679 points. Cariello had a toss of 10.96 meters (35 feet, 11.5 inches) in the shot put for 543 points before a career best 1.86 meter (six feet, 1.25 inches) clearance in the high jump for 679 points. Cariello finished the first day with a career-best time of 52.23 in the 400-meter dash for 715 points.
The second day of the decathlon will begin on Wednesday, April 23 at 10:30 a.m. with the 110-meter high hurdles. The competition will continue with the discus, pole vault and javelin before finishing with the 1,500-meter run.
