Cahill & Taggert Lead Greyhounds at 24th Annual John Covert Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College junior thrower Greg Cahill set the school and Landmark Conference record in the weight throw while junior Cory Taggert won the 800-meter run to lead the Greyhounds at the non-scoring 24th Annual John Covert Classic hosted by Lehigh University Saturday at Rauch Fieldhouse.

Cahill finished in third place in the 35-pound weight throw with an ECAC qualifying and both Moravian and Landmark Conference record toss of 16.24 meters (53-3.5) as he bettered the previous mark set by the Greyhounds' Blair Maginnis in 2009 by just over two feet. Cahill's throw puts him 24th on the Track & Field Results Reporting System list and the top 15 student-athletes in each event will head to the NCAA Division III National Championships in March. Taggert captured the 800-meter run in an ECAC qualifying time of 1:57.16, the 10th fastest time in school history and also 24th on the TFRRS list.

Graduate student Parker Munson placed fourth behind Cahill in the weight throw with an ECAC qualifying mark of 15.37 meters (50-5.25) while freshman Jon Anthony was tenth with a toss of 11.84 meters (38-10.25). Junior Kahron Walker finished third in the long jump with an ECAC qualifying leap of 6.70 meters (21-11.75) while junior Kyle Hagerty was ninth in the event at 6.40 meters (21-0).

Freshman Denzel Pettway was third in the shot put with an ECAC qualifying toss of 14.40 meters (47-3) while senior Ryan Karnopp was fourth in the pole vault clearing 4.40 meters (14-5.25). Freshman Scott Goodwin took tenth in the pole vault at 3.65 meters (11-11.75).

Back on the track, sophomore Eric Morton placed sixth in the 60-meter dash in 7.32 seconds while junior Matt Barnett was tenth in 7.39 seconds. Senior Gavin Bailey finished fourth in the 400-meter dash in 52.03 seconds, and senior Tyler Dwyer was seventh in the race in 52.97 seconds. Freshman John Spirk took tenth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.07 seconds.

The Greyhounds will head to the Susquehanna University Invitational in Selinsgrove on Saturday, February 6.
