BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's track & field team is in first place of six teams after the opening day of the 2017 Landmark Conference Championships being hosted by the Greyhounds at Timothy Breidegam Track and Rocco Calvo Field this weekend.
The men have 68 points after six completed events and lead Juniata College by ten points.
Sophomore Scott Goodwin captured the title in the pole vault at a height of 4.25 meters (13-11.25), and junior Preston Weidner was fifth in the event at 3.95 meters (12-11.5) to earn four points. Senior Greg Cahill won the discus with an ECAC qualifying toss of 42.83 meters (140-6) while sophomore Jon Anthony placed third at a distance of 40.02 meters (131-3) while sophomore Tyler Bergsma took fifth at 38.11 meters (125-0).
Cahill also took third in the hammer with a toss of 41.90 meters (137-6) while sophomore Hunter Gibson placed fourth at a distance of 38.93 meters (127-9), freshman Ryan Harper finished fifth at 37.62 meters (123-5) and Bergsma took seventh at 36.06 meters (118-4).
Senior Kahron Walker was the runner-up in the long jump at an ECAC qualifying distance of 6.89 meters (22-7.25) while sophomore Brian Stock finished fifth in the long jump with an ECAC qualifying leap of 6.66 meters (21-1.25) and senior Kyle Hagerty was eighth at 6.31 meters (20-8.5).
Freshman Greg Jaindl was seventh in the 1,500-meter run in 4:05.26 to earn two points while sophomore Devon Harris was eighth in 4:06.43. Freshman Gavin Kemery earned a team point with his eighth place finish in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 34:08.41.
In preliminary races, Moravian had four runners advance to the finals in the 100-meter dash led by junior Eric Morton, who had the top qualifying time of 11.11 seconds. Morton edged senior Austin Gardener by one one-thousandth of a second with both hitting the ECAC qualifying time, and freshman Billy DiLolle in third with a time of 11.14 seconds and senior Matt Barnett in fifth at 11.52 seconds also advanced to the final. Gardener had the top qualifying time in the 200-meter dash at 22.53 seconds, and DiLolle, who had the second-best time in 22.56 seconds and Morton, who had the fourth-best time in 22.89 seconds, will join him in the finals.
Action on the second day of the 2017 Landmark Conference Championship is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 7 with the men's javelin.
