TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College freshman sprinter Zion Howard and junior pole vaulter Scott Goodwin have been selected as the Landmark Conference Men's Track & Field Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Howard, who was honored as the Landmaark Conference Track Athlete of the Week for the second time in three weeks, won a pair of events at the Susquehanna University Challenge on Saturday. He captured the 60-meter dash by three-thousandths of a second with a time of 7.00 seconds (6.993), the fifth fastest time in school history, and Howard captured the 200-meter dash in 22.90 seconds. He also ran the anchor leg of Moravian's 4x200-meter relay team that finished second in 1:34.33.
"Zion came out of the gates strong this year at our meet back in December so we weren't too surprised he'd have a good season," stated Head Coach Jesse Baumann. "You could see it in practice and his initial testing too, that he was on the cusp of having a strong year but he's taken another step forward the past few weeks with. At Ursinus two week's ago, he had a busy day and capped it off with a good 4x400 split, and then clearly this weekend at Susquehanna was another breakthrough for him. He's very competitive on the track and responds extremely well when challenged. He'll have a great opportunity this weekend at The Armory to continue to bring his times down as we aim for him making it to Alabama five weeks from now."
Goodwin won the pole vault at the 19th Annual DeSchriver Invitational hosted by East Stroudsburg University on Saturday by clearing a height of 4.26 meters (13-11.75). Goodwin also posted a time of 25.33 seconds in the 200-meter dash to finish in 35th place.
"Scott isn't quite where he can be just yet, but he's showing consistency which is a sign that he's ready for a breakthrough," commented Baumann. "We weren't able to wear spikes at the meet this weekend due to the facility so that was a challenge, but The Armory this weekend is one of the best atmospheres and venues in the country so I expect him to start working his way towards the 15' bars he's proven he's capable of in practice."
Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Friday, February 9 at the New York University Invitational at the New York City Armory with the meet beginning at 2:00 p.m.
