EASTON, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's track & field squad placed first of three NCAA Division II/Division III teams at the Lafayette College 8-Way Meet Saturday as the Greyhounds competed as a full team for the first time in the 2018 outdoor season.
The Hounds scored 232 points, finishing 39 points ahead of St. Thomas Aquinas while Muhlenberg College registered 47 points. The Greyhounds had a total of seven individual event and one relay team winner in the DII/DIII events including junior John Spirk capturing a pair of events. Spirk won the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.85 seconds, and he took first in the 400-meter hurdles in 55.98 seconds.
Freshman Zion Howard won the 200-meter dash in 21.65 seconds, the fastest overall time in the meet. Howard ran the second leg of Moravian's 4x400-meter relay team with Spirk on the opening leg, sophomore Evan Lutz on the third leg and freshman Sean McFarland running the anchor leg to a first-place time of 3:27.87.
Sophomore Greg Jaindl win the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:33.06 while junior Devon Harris won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:00.25. Senior Andrew Mitchell captured the 800-meter run in 1:56.34 while senior Mike Kopach took second in 1:59.62.
Junior Scott Goodwin captured the pole vault at a height of 4.55 meters (14-11), which was tied for the best height overall in the meet. Senior Preston Weidner was the runner-up at 3.80 meters (12-5.5) while freshman John Stires took third at a height of 3.50 meters (11-5.75). Junior Brian Stock was second in the long jump with a distance of 6.39 meters (20-11.75) while junior Da'Juon Hibbert placed fourth at 4.29 meters (14-1). Freshman Michael Elo was the runner-up in the triple jump with a distance of 13.55 meters (44-5.5).
In the throwing events, sophomore Ryan Harper was the runner-up in the hammer throw with a toss of 42.02 meters (137-10) while junior Tyler Bergsma took third at 38.59 meters (126-7). Senior Robert Condo placed second in the javelin with a toss of 54.21 meters (177-10) while sophomore Nick Cregar was third with a distance of 47.34 meters (155-4). Freshman Shane Mastro finished second in the shot put with a toss of 12.75 meters (41-10) while Bergsma took third at 12.64 meters (41-5.75), Harper was fourth at 12.37 meters (40-7) and freshman Derek Scott placed sixth with a distance of11.24 meters (36-10.5). Mastro was also third in the discus with a toss of 38.55 meters (126-6) while Scott took fourth at 37.02 meters (121-5).
Sophomore Gavin Kemery was the runner-up in the 5,000-meter run in 16;13.93 while sophomore Alex Tursi finished fifth in 17:24.93, senior Josh Toth placed seventh in 17:29.49, freshman Franklin Musnuff took eighth in a time of 17:44.19 and freshman Billy Milburn finished in ninth at 17:57.09. Junior Benjamin Smith was fourth in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:16.21 while senior Aaron Hofmann was seventh at 4:25.00. Sophomore Justin Beasley-Turner was fourth in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:02.01 while freshman Peter Gingrich took seventh in 2:04.57 and freshman Jarred Kyra was ninth in 2:09.15.
In other sprint results, Howard was the runner-up in the 100-meter dash in 10.82 seconds while senior Eric Morton finished fourth in 11.31 seconds, Elo was sixth in 11.57 seconds, junior Chris Antoine took eighth in 11.75 seconds and junior Baru Roberson placed ninth at 11.82 seconds. Roberson was also fifth in the 200-meter dash in 25.59 seconds. McFarland was the runner-up in the 400-meter dash in 53.31 seconds while Lutz took fourth in 54.43 seconds. Junior Woodrow Battle was fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.08 seconds and fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:04.19.
Moravian is slated to compete again on Saturday, April 7 at the Muhlenberg College Invitational in Allentown.
