TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College freshman sprinter Zion Howard and senior thrower Robert Condo have been selected as the Landmark Conference Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week for their performance this past weekend.
Howard, who earned his second outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honor, was the runner-up in the 200-meter dash at the Coach P Invitational in 21.54 seconds which is .02 slower than his time that is tied for sixth in the nation, and he took third in the 100-meter dash in 10.93 seconds after the fastest preliminary time of 10.67 seconds, which is also tied for sixth in the nation on the Track & Field Results Reporting System list. Howard ran the second leg of Moravian's 4x400-meter relay squad that finished fourth in 3:22.63.
"Zion has been getting his 200 times down to the point where we feel there's a good shot of him making NCAAs, we've just been waiting on his 100 times to come down as well," commented Head Coach Jesse Baumann. "He was a little disappointed in his 100 final which wasn't his quickest due to a slower start, but his trials time was incredible and even if he doesn't improve his time this year, there's a decent chance of that time holding to get him to NCAAs. Obviously we expect him to continue to improve, but it's been an amazing start to the outdoor season for him thus far."
Condo, who also received his second outdoor Field Athlete of the Week accolade this spring, was the runner-up in the javelin at Coach P Invitational with a toss of 60.50 meters (198-6) that moves him to 11th in the nation on the TFRRS list.
"Rob had some meets that were a little below what he had hoped at the beginning of the season, but he just needed a few more competitions under his belt," Baumann said. "He's been training great, he's thrown really well in practice so we knew he was ready to unleash some big throws, we were just waiting for it to happen when it truly mattered. He'll still throw a lot farther this year, especially as we get into the bigger meets like Penn Relays, but it was a great step in the right direction for him and puts him in a great position to make NCAAs again."
Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Friday and Saturday, April 20-21 when the squad hosts the Annual Greyhound Invitational at Timothy Breidegam Track and Rocco Calvo Field with action beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Friday and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
