TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College senior thrower Shane Mastro has been selected as the 2021 Landmark Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete for Men's Indoor Track & Field.

The Landmark Conference selects 22 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, senior woman administrators and sports information directors. Chosen at the conclusion of each sport season, the six winter honorees are being announced this week.

In three indoor seasons, Mastro won the Landmark Conference title in the shot put all three years. In 2020, he captured the title in the event with a toss of 14.46 meters (47-5.25) and was third in the weight throw at 15.48 meters (50-9.5). Mastro was also named as United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Mideast Region in shot put last winter. During 2019, he won the shot put championship with a distance of 14.65 meters (48-0.75) and was third in the weight throw at 14.96 meters (49-1), and as a freshman in 2018, Mastro won Landmark Conference title in shot put with a toss of 13.82 meters (45-2.5), and he finished 12th in the weight throw at 11.15 meters (36-7).

During his outdoor throwing career so far, Mastro won the 2019 Landmark Conference title in the shot put at 14.89 meters (48-10.25) and was the runner-up in discus at 43.22m (141-9). He also has a third place in the shot put outdoors in 2018, an eighth place in the discus in 2018 and a fifth in the hammer throw in 2019 and an 11th in the event in 2018.

Mastro is also a starter on the defensive line for the Greyhounds' football team. He has 134 career tackles with 71 solo stops in 27 games to go along with six and a half sacks, 19.5 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, four pass break-ups and one blocked kick.

Outside of the circles and off the gridiron, Mastro has maintained a 3.45 GPA in accounting at Moravian.  Mastro will be a five-time Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll selection and he will become a member of Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society this spring. He's made the Dean's List four times during his time with the Greyhounds. Mastro is also a member of the Accounting Honor Society, the Economic Honor Society, the Amrhein Investment Club and worked with Habitat for Humanity.

"Shane has been a key member of the track and field program these past four years," stated throwing coach Jonathan D'Ottavio. "From winning conference titles, scoring big points for the team, and becoming one of only a handful of guys to throw the shot put over 15 meters at Moravian, he's one of the best I've ever coached. He's also just as good if not a better student. As both a thrower and a defensive lineman for our football team Shane has been able to balance playing sports year-round and pursuing his degree in sports management at a very high level. He's been a member of the Dean's List multiple times and is currently interning with Wagner College working with their media relations in the athletics department. He's also planning on pursuing an MBA in the fall after he graduates this spring. Shane is a model for what being an elite level student-athlete at Moravian is all about."

Mastro is Moravian's 34th Landmark Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete since the conference began in 2007-08, and he is the fifth men's indoor track & field student-athlete to be honored and ninth overall selection from the Moravian men's track & field program.
