No. 18 Greyhounds Sweep Staten Island to Close Out Regular Season

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --- The No. 18 ranked Moravian College softball team swept its final non-conference doubleheader of the regular season Saturday as the Greyhounds defeated the College of Staten Island, 6-1 and 5-0.

The Hounds finish the regular season at 32-4 and will host the 2016 Landmark Conference Tournament at Blue & Grey Field in Bethlehem on Friday and Saturday, May 6-7.

Moravian had nine hits in the opener with sophomore first baseman Jean Markovic going 2-for-2 and junior designated Victoria Conner turning in a 2-for-4 performance.

Sophomore Amanda Carisone earned the win in the circle to improve to 15-2 on the year. She allowed an unearned run on four hits and two walks, and Carisone recorded five strikeouts to become the 10th pitcher in school history to reach 200 career strikeouts.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the third inning in the first game. Junior left fielder Julie Siragusa started the scoring with an RBI single with the bases loaded, and sophomore catcher Janae Matos followed with a two-RBI double. Conner ripped an RBI single to score Siragusa, and Markovic followed with RBI single to plate Matos.

Moravian pushed the lead to 6-0 in the top of the sixth inning when freshman third baseman Madison Shaneberger connected on a one-out solo home run to left field, her third homer of the season.

The Blue and Grey knocked out 11 hits in the second game with Matos going 2-for-3 and Shaneberger, Conner and freshman center fielder Kat Spilman each going 2-for-4.

Sophomore Josie Novak tossed a four-hit shutout to improve to 17-2 in the circle this spring. She allowed three walks while striking out eight batters in the victory.

The Greyhounds scored all five of their runs in the second contest in the top of the second inning. Siragusa led off with a single through the left side to become the 43rd player in school history to reach 100 career hits, and she scored on an RBI double by Conner. Freshman pinch runner Makenna Masenheimer scored on a passed ball while Shaneberger drove in a pair of runs with a two-RBI single. Spilman finished off the inning with an RBI single.

Moravian, which had its final home non-conference doubleheader of 2016 scheduled for Sunday, May 1 cancelled due to rain moving into the Lehigh Valley, will return to action on Friday, May 6 as the top seeded Greyhounds play fourth seed the University of Scranton in the opening game of the Landmark Conference Tournament at Blue & Grey Field with first pitch slated for 11:00 a.m.
