Hounds Fall to No. 16 Ithaca in 2nd Round of NCAA DIII Regional

ITHACA, N.Y. --- The No. 17 ranked and second seeded Moravian College softball team fell to host, top seed and No. 16 ranked Ithaca College, 8-0 in five innings, in a winner's bracket game Saturday morning.

The Greyhounds fall to 36-5 on the season with the loss and will play in the second elimination game on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Ithaca advances to the championship round on Sunday, May 15 beginning at 12:00 p.m.

"It isn't the way you want to come out in a second round game," stated Head Coach John Byrne. "We really didn't do anything well. The defense was a big disappointment, offense we did nothing to threaten them and our pitching wasn't there today."

Moravian was limited to three hits in the game, singles by junior designated player Victoria Conner, sophomore first baseman Jean Markovic and freshman shortstop Kaela Kane.

Sophomore pitcher Josie Novak took the loss in the circle for the Greyhounds and is now 19-3 on the season after allowing eight runs, just three earned, on seven hits and a walk while striking out three batters.

The Bombers took advantage of a Moravian error to score four times in the first inning, and Ithaca added two runs in the third frame and two more in the bottom of the fifth to end the contest.

"We need to forget about the first game, regroup and play the way we are capable of playing," Byrne said. "We need to get back to solid defense and pitching. That is what our game has been since our offense is not built to score a ton of runs. If we don't have pitching and defense, the season will be over later today or they can fight back and keep playing."
