CLERMONT, Fla. --- The No. 17 Moravian College softball team won two more contests at the Spring Games at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida with wins over Haverford College, 5-2, and Alfred (N.Y.) University, 4-0, Monday morning.
The Greyhounds, now 4-0 on the year, had 12 hits in the opener against the Fords with junior catcher Janae Matos going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of doubles. Senior left fielder Julie Siragusa added a 3-for-5 game with an RBI and a double to move into a tie for seventh in school history with her 34th career double.
Junior Amanda Carisone improved to 2-0 in the circle as she allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits in the contest.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Sirgusa started the game with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore center fielder Kat Spilman.
Haverford answered with a run in the bottom of the second but the Blue and Grey would retake the lead for good with three runs in the top of the third inning for a 4-1 advantage. Sophomore shortstop Kaela Kane singled and scored on an error before Matos connected on a two-RBI double.
The Fords scored again in the fourth to cut Moravian's lead to 4-2. The Greyhounds finished off the scoring in the top of the seventh when sophomore pinch hitter Madison Shaneberger connected on a two-out double and scored on an RBI single by Siragusa.
In the game against Alfred, junior pitcher Josie Novak tossed her second straight one-hit shutout to start the season in the 4-0 win. Novak, who walked one batter, recorded eight strikeouts to move into fourth in school history with 347 strikeouts, and she became the 10th pitcher in school history to reach 40 career victories.
Moravian added eight more hits in the win with freshman right fielder Lauren Goetz going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. Matos added another double and an RBI in the game.
The Blue and Grey gave Novak all the offense she needed with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Senior shortstop Lizzie Deutsch drew a one-out walk and scored on an RBI double to left field by Matos, and Goetz would drive in Matos and senior first baseman Abby Jeffries with a two-RBI single.
Moravian tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Goetz led off with a single and raced home on an RBI pinch hit single by senior Niki Maffettone.
After a day off, the Greyhounds will return to action at the Spring Games on Wednesday, March 8 when they are scheduled to play Alvernia University at 11:30 a.m. and the University of Mount Union at 2:00 p.m.
