BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The No. 7 Moravian College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the College of Staten Island at Blue & Grey Field Saturday with the Greyhounds winning the opener, 5-0, and the Dolphins taking the nightcap, 3-1.
The Hounds saw their 20-game winning streak snapped in the second game, as the squad is now 31-3 on the year.
In the opener, junior Josie Novak tossed her 11th shutout of the season, to move into a tie for third most in a single season in school history, as she scattered two hits and two walks to go with five strikeouts.
Moravian had ten hits with senior left fielder Julie Siragusa and freshman second baseman Lauren Goetz each going 3-for-3 with Siragusa adding two runs, a double and an RBI and Goetz contributing a homer, a double, two runs and an RBI. Sophomore shortstop Kaela Kane was 2-for-4 while sophomore center fielder Kat Spilman added two RBIs.
The Blue and Grey gave Novak all of the offense she needed in the second inning when Goetz connected on a two-out home run to left field, her first collegiate homer. Moravian added a run in the third inning when Siragusa drew a walk and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Spilman.
The Greyhounds pushed two runs across the plate in the fourth inning to double the lead to 4-0. Goetz led off with a single and scored on an RBI double to left center by Siragusa. Kane followed with an RBI single through the right side to score Siragusa.
Moravian finished off the scoring in the opener with a run in the sixth frame. Goetz led off with a double and sophomore Julia DeMarco came on to pinch run. DeMarco would eventually score on an infield RBI single by Spilman.
Junior Amanda Carisone dropped her first decision of the year in the circle in the second game, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts.
The Greyhounds were limited to three hits at the plate in the second game. Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Siragusa led off with a double and scored on a wild pitch. Siragusa is fourth in school history with 41 career doubles after the game and she also became the 16th player in program history to reach 150 career hits.
The Dolphins scored twice in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead, and Staten Island added another run on the sixth inning. The Blue and Grey left five runners on base in the second game including two in scoring position in the sixth.
Moravian is slated to return to action on Sunday, April 23 in a Landmark Conference doubleheader versus The Catholic University of America beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Blue & Grey Field in Bethlehem.
