Hounds' Win at Providence Regional in 2010 Selected as Landmark Conference Top Moment

TOWSON, Md. --- The 2016-17 season marks the 10-year anniversary for the Landmark Conference. As part of the buildup to each sport's championship season, fans were asked to select their favorite moment from the first decade from a list created by members of the conference. Each winning moment will be announced prior to the conference championship.

After the final round of voting, Moravian College winning the if necessary game to advance to the 2010 NCAA Division III World Series received 44 percent of the votes to win the top moment. The University of Scranton's 12-11 victory over Catholic University of America to clinch first playoff win came in second, and Elizabethtown College's upset of top-two seeds to reach the Landmark title game came in third.

On May 17, 2010, the 24th-ranked and second seeded Moravian College softball team posted a 5-0 shutout over third seed Kean (N.J.) University in the if necessary game to win the 2010 NCAA Division III Providence Regional and earn a berth to the 2010 NCAA Division III College World Series.

The Greyhounds would make their third trip to the World Series in the last seven years, and will take on the East Texas Baptist University on Friday, May 21st at 7:30 p.m. EDT in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Moravian was the runner-up at the 2004 World Series, and the squad dropped two games at the 2007 World Series.

Sophomore pitcher Jenna Carmon tossed her third shutout of the Providence Regional, allowing just five hits and striking out five batters to improve to 25-9 on the season, tied for the second most wins in school history in a single season. Carmon was one of five Greyhounds named to the Providence Regional All-Tournament Team.

Kean's best scoring chance came in the second inning when a pair of Moravian errors allowed the Cougars to load the bases but Carmon registered a pair of called third strikeouts to end the inning.

The Greyhounds would give Carmon all the offense she needed with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman catcher Tori Thomas reached on a fielder's choice, beating out a throw on a double play attempt that would have ended the inning. Junior designated player Stephanie Falzarano drew a walk and senior Katie Flood came on to pinch run for Thomas at second base.  Freshman shortstop Katie Gross then ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Flood from second base, and the throw home put Falzarano on third and Gross at second.  Freshman third baseman Shannen Mohr followed with a two-RBI single to right field with Falzarano scoring easily and Gross beating the throw to the plate.

Moravian would add two runs to it lead in the sixth for a 5-0 advantage. Junior outfielder Amanda Paulus reached on a fielder's choice for the second out of the winning. Sophomore outfielder Olivia Evanko then reached on a throwing error on a ground ball just in front of the plate, and the throw moved Paulus to third and Evanko to second. Thomas followed with an infield RBI single to second base to score Paulus, and Falzarano drew her third straight walk to load the bases. Gross then drew an RBI base on balls sending Evanko across the plate.

The Greyhounds, which has ten freshmen on its 18-player roster, had an 8-5 edge in hits with Gross going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Gross and Mohr also set the school record for games played in a season Monday, playing in their 47th game of the season, also a record for the Moravian team. Gross also had four assists in the field to set the Moravian single season record with 114 assists.

Gross, Mohr, Paulus and freshman first baseman Amanda Dizinno also earned spots on the Providence Regional All-Tournament Team.
